New Librarian Chosen for Sikeston Public Library
Mrs. Jack Lair of Sikeston has been selected as librarian and will start around August 15. She succeeds acting librarian Mrs. Frank Miller, who takes a faculty post at the local public schools. Two Girls Drown in Ditch Near Oran Tragic Rescue by Joe Fletcher
Sunday tragedy near Oran left Luella Pyle and Helen Rose dead after stepping into a deep ditch hole in the Little River Drainage System. Joe Fletcher, a Black man, rescued six year old Coleman boy who nearly drowned, refusing to quit as he performed resuscitation until life returned. Bodies of the two girls were returned to Portageville for funeral services. coroner Clyde Poe ruled no formal inquest needed.
