William L. White of Emporia Kansas son of the late William Allen White s Sage of Emporia has been appointed to fill the vacancy on the United States Territorial Expansion Commission created by his father s death. The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial Association made the appointment. Missouri will require about 5600 full time or 11200 part time workers to process and can food this year per War Manpower estimates by Paul V McNutt. By end of 1944 commercial airlines may operate more planes than ever before with 300 in service, vs 257 now and 167 in May 1942. a limitation keeps total planes at 300.

E. W. Richmond, Bloomfield mayor serving his third term, is free on 10 000 bond after manslaughter charges tied to the July 4 death of Lloyd Cook 36 a Bloomfield resident. Cook died from a skull injury after an altercation in front of a cafe as City Marshal Williamson struggled with a disorderly suspect. Funeral services were held at 2 30 PM at the Blodgett Baptist church for James Henry Shelton retired farmer who died July 3 at John Gaskin Hospital Memphis. Burial followed in Blodgett cemetery. Born April 14 1862 in Kentucky he spent most of his life in Blodgett area. Survived by three sons Arthur Vernon Shelton of Sikes ton Elmer Shelton Memphis three daughters Della Rappoff Memphis Minnie Lewis Hayti Josie Diggs Cairo and one brother Minus Shelton Paducah Ky.

Steve Applegate Dies in Air Crash
Lieut. Steve Applegate son of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Applegate formerly of Sikeston now in Denver was fatally injured in Ontario California on his 21st birthday when a P-38 he piloted failed during takeoff. He had received his wings at Victoria Texas last February and was advancing in flying on the west coast. Sikeston relatives include Dr. H. L. Smith Ralph Anderson an aunt Mrs Ella Olu and great grandmother Mrs C. E. Kendall.

Lyman A. Matthews of Cape Girardeau, Sikeston native and son of A. J. Matthews, was named by Gov. Forrest C. Donnell to a six year term on the State Highway Commission, succeeding Baxter B. Bond. Sikeston Municipal Pool, now in its fourth year, has paid off construction indebtedness under Jaycee management. Certificates bought to fund the city share remain cashed, with some organizations possibly tearing up donations. Conly Purcell and Edward Allard spearheaded the effort, keeping the pool profitable despite rain. Cadets from the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics used the pool for two years, and Friday Saturday mornings remain free for Sikeston children.
