The United States paid Switzerland 1 056 052 this week for the wartime interment of American flyers who landed there. Over 200 New Madrid county farmers attended the 12th annual Soils and Crop Conference in New Madrid. Murray Klein of Sikeston was elected chairman with John Brown of New Madrid as vice-president. Howard New of Kewanee was chosen secretary and Dale Keske of Matthews registrar for 1949. Principal speaker John Falloon urged soil fertility through organic matter and mineral plant food, noting lime usage rose from 500,000 to over 3,000,000 tons in the past year. He recommended a balanced plan boosting organic matter and mineral nutrients for better yields.

New Book Fund Drive Sees $101 Pledged for Books
The Friends of the Library drive reports $101 in total pledges so far for new book purchases. Rotary members pledged $36 with Kiwanis at $19 and Woman’s Club at $12 plus a $25 personal donation. Malone Residence Destroyed by Fire
The residence of Mrs. W.T. Malone at 219 West Gladys was partially destroyed by fire last Saturday morning. The blaze started from an overheated basement furnace and most furnishings were removed from burning rooms. Insurance covered the damage.

C. L. Blanton Jr. Grover C. Baker and N. E. Fuchs were indicted by a federal grand jury in St. Louis for vote buying in the 1946 general election. Each posted $1500 bond before US Commissioner R. P. Smith in Cape Girardeau. Bonds were signed by William S. Corrigan bank official and local landowners Tom Allen and Leo Fisher of Sikeston.

Indictment last Friday in St. Louis charged Charles L. Blanton Jr., Grover C. Baker, and N. E. Fuchs with conspiring to pay voters in Sikeston during the November 5, 1946 general election.
