Sikeston voters registered for the first time after a new Missouri law requires registration in cities over 10,000. With a 1950 census count of over 10,900, registration trails the 1950 mayoral vote total of 4157. Ward 1 led, followed by Ward 4, as precincts report varied turnout from the April 1950 election.
A rally and banquet for Methodist men of the Cape Girardeau district will be held at the Student Center on the campus of State College in Cape Girardeau on Thursday evening January 24 beginning at 7 p.m. It is expected that many men from the Sikeston church will attend.
Dr. Jarrette Aycock district superintendent of the Kansas City district will speak at the Naza Tene church in Matthews at 2 45 Sunday afternoon January 20. Rev P R Bynum the pastor and members extend a welcome to everyone to attend as they believe those who do so will enjoy the address and the special singing arranged for the occasion.
A letter from James C. Barber, a prisoner of war in North Korea, to his parents in Charter Oak describes his health, mentions a planned Christmas celebration by the C.P.V., and asks for a response. He notes he had been listed missing since January 4, 1951, and signs off warmly from P.O.W. Camp North Korea.
T. C. Falles 24, shot on a Sunset addition street last Saturday night, is in serious condition at Delta Community Hospital. Walter Bouie 26, held in Benton county jail, is charged with the shooting and faces trial next Wednesday. Bouie, described as a drunken offender with prior terms in reform and prison, used a 20 gauge shotgun.
Sikeston Bulldogs win second straight as they overpower Charleston 55 to 32 led by Damon Dale with 16 points. The A team built a 24-16 halftime lead while sub players filled in. Donald Lewis led the Bullpups with 12 in a 36-19 win as Bo hanson added six in each game.
State Highway Patrol headquarters at Poplar Bluff reported to The Herald there have been no traffic fatalities in the Southeast Missouri district since the first of the year and very few seriously injured. An official said we are keeping our fingers crossed given the region's deplorable fatality record.
Jan 17 Matthews report details a short stocky Black man attempting a burglary at the Denbow home. The intruder was found with trousers under his arm, a knife wounded Howard Atwill, and fled shoe-less after a scuffle that damaged furniture. State Patrol joined the search after earlier reports linked the man to Sikeston areas.
About 201 farm leaders from Scott County attended the 18th Annual Soils and Crops Conference at Benton to discuss pasture and soil improvement. Missouri Extension leaders announced statewide meetings for winter across 114 counties. Officers for 1953 were elected and program topics covered pasture systems, corn yields on Sikeston Ridge soil, and fertilization to raise row-crop yields.
Next Wednesday Mr and Mrs J Z Sutton will observe their golden wedding anniversary with open house at their Dorothy Street home from 3:20 to 8:50.
Yesterday fifteen Scott County men went to St Louis for induction into the armed services. A total of nineteen Scott County men will leave for induction January 29 with twenty more expected in February Ten of the February group will depart February 6 and ten on February 18.

The Sikeston Chamber of Commerce aims to entertain and honor Southeast Missouri One Hundred Bushes Corn Club members formed with Extension Service and local farming groups in Scott Mississippi New Madrid and Stoddard counties. Pete Smith says a dinner date is tentatively set for February with a formal announcement to follow. To join, farmers must average 100 bushels per acre on at least five acres. Forty nine farmers across the four counties have qualified.
A Sikeston district meeting with 40 farmers recalled early road work on the Salcedo road toward Bloomfield. speakers included James W. Baker Jr who described corduroy and later gravel upgrades, and officials H D Rodgers and M S Gwinn discussed application processes and funding needs for blacktop surfacing.
In Sikeston magistrate court two men faced charges. Oren Hitler Pitts pled guilty to careless and reckless driving, fined $5 plus costs. Burrel Minefield charged with carrying a concealed weapon, held for circuit court in Benton. Bud Haws and Dale Callow pled guilty to peace disturbance, each fined $35. Willard Mastensen pled guilty to careless and reckless driving while intoxicated, fined $25 and sentenced to 60 days in county jail. John Reed fined $5 for seining fish in the Mississippi River. charge by a Conservation agent. Junior Russom fined $5 for violating game laws.
The Public Service Commission of Missouri granted Southwestern Bell Telephone Company permission to raise state rates by 11 119 000 annually, after a prior request for 316 million. The new rates, effective February 1, aim to yield about 6 5 percent on investment, with the increase cited as the third in recent years. Details on Sikeston and other district communities were not announced by The Herald.
