Fulton voters reject city manager plan 1101 to 744. Wright airplane Kitty Hawk to Smithsonian. Irish premier chosen after de Valera ousted. Wallace victory in Bronx special election. English tractors to U S at 200 daily, 15000 yearly. Supreme Court upholds rent controls. Mayambassador Franks to U S. IRS reports 1.982 billion in extra taxes plus fines near 1 million.
Grain and livestock markets paused at near levels last week with a leveling trend and possible gradual decline ahead. Improved world conditions curb inflation, cotton and corn regain value while wheat loses a penny per bushel and soybeans fall further. Livestock shows small week to week swings with firmer hogs and vealers, butter down a cent, eggs up slightly, and overall food prices easing led by meat.
Over 100 Scott county cotton ginners and producers will gather at the Dunn Hotel Tuesday night February 24 for a dinner meeting at 6 pm. J R Dixie Paulling of the Missouri College of Agriculture will discuss quality of cotton to hold to market demands with several other speakers covering cotton varieties classing and ginning developments. Scott county 4 H club members honored for 1947 cotton project exhibit at the Jaycee 4 H Jubilee.
General Chairman Geo Hale Jr reports $2600 raised in Sikeston Boy Scout annual drive with about $1600 from Advance Gift in business districts and $1000 from residential campaign led by Mrs Buford Baker. An area meeting of district finance chairmen will review results at the high school.
The annual Scott County Farm Bureau meeting, moved from February 5 due to weather, will convene in Benton at 1 p.m. on February 26 in the Circuit Court room. H. Slusher, Missouri Farm Bureau Federation president, will be the main speaker, with Simon J. Jirik urging strong attendance. Clyde Brown of State Service Company may also speak, and wives of members are invited to attend.
Three Morehouse men Freddie Marlen Chafin Harold Eugene Tarrant and Robert Lee Irvin were jailed in New Madrid County on burglary and larceny charges after a dawn break in at two Morehouse establishments. The trio allegedly stole two cases of beer from Don's Tavern and a large safe from Wayside Gin Co. The safe contents totaled 335.36 dollars with checks and bonds recovered later from the St Francis river. The safe was recovered partially damaged after being sunk in the river by the thieves themselves.
At the National Farm Loan Association meeting held yesterday at the Library, Ralph F. Anderson reported 310 loans with an unpaid balance of 564,128.26 were serviced last year. The association serves Stoddard, Scott, New Madrid and Mississippi counties. Directors elected include Lawrence Simpson and Roy Johnson for three years, Maxwell Williams and Joe Dirnberger for two years, George Doerr for one year. Williams was re elected president, Simpson became vice president, and Anderson remained secretary treasurer with Mrs. Borgers as assistant. A sound picture Banking on the Land was shown, followed by dinner at the Dunn Hotel with music by Rev. and Mrs. Guttenfelder.
A total of 4500 passenger car licenses have been issued by Deputy Commissioner Herman Mattingly up to noon today with demand continuing from owners who missed yesterday's deadline. During the first three days of this week nearly 1500 applications for auto truck and trailer tags were made at the Limestone office. Auto tag numbers yesterday began a new series starting with 454 001. Licenses will continue to be issued but drivers with 1947 plates are liable to arrest today.
Weather notes in Southeast Missouri report a low of 34 degrees and a high of 70 degrees last day. Forecasters expect continued fair skies and warmer temperatures into the weekend, signaling a pleasant period ahead.
Scott County Milling Co. temporarily closed its three mills in Sikeston Oran and Dexter affecting about 100 employees as wheat and corn prices slump. Manager Lyman Bowman cited reduced stocks and ongoing export declines but noted feed demand has nearly doubled due to lower grain prices. Local acreage may double last year's plantings with favorable weather signaling potential higher yields.
Clyde Swank city manager of Charleston will address the Kiwanis Club tomorrow night outlining the city manager form of government. The Public Affairs committee arranges the program to educate members about the system from a leading authority.
About 50 district letter carriers are expected in town Sunday for the semi annual Southeast Missouri District Carriers Association meeting. The gathering at the Dunn Hotel starts at noon with luncheon then a business session. Elections will be held for president vice president secretary treasurer and directors. Current president J O Brown of Cape Girardeau attends along with Sikeston carriers Harrison Tanner John Layton George Springs Homer Wilson Wilfred Scherer Joe Schaffer and Lewis Flewelling.
A mobile X-ray unit for Scott County was approved by the Scott County Medical Society at a library meeting. Jos A Leslie led the Tuberculosis Association request. The unit will offer free X-ray service next fall, with results interpreted by the State Health Department and enlarged images provided to physicians as needed.
Sikeston high school Bulldogs meet Cape Girardeau College Preps in two games here Friday night. The schedule shift follows Wednesday fires and cancellations, with Sikeston’s final local appearance before the sub regional at Dexter next Wednesday to face Gray Ridge.
The eleventh annual meeting of Scott New Madrid Mississippi Electric Cooperative will be at Sikeston Armory next Wednesday Feb 25. From 1200 to 1500 members from six Southeast Missouri counties expected for all day event. Congressman Orville Zimmerman of Kennett to speak before returning to Washington. The meeting starts 9 30 with registration and roll call. Judge Elon Proffer will call the group to order and present his report. Zimmerman will address as principal guest. Secretary Treasurer Alvin G Gasser will present the afternoon session, followed by H M Zarkor’s annual report. Four directors to be elected: Ernest Moxley Charleston Earl Weeks Sr Bell City Louis Albrecht Time and R G Stroud Matthews. REA serves over 3800 members and plans to add 454 farms and 106 miles of new lines. Currently 79 miles in service across six counties. Applications on file from 4200 potential members in five years of expansion limits. Nine years of operation since March 10 1939 and 176 miles served. Other members include David E Conn Wyatt E S Nelson Wyatt John Dirnberger New Hamburg L B Mayer Dexter J H Spradling Kewanee and Roscoe Russell Dexter.
H M Zarkor announces bids will be opened Tuesday February 24 for a 175000 REA project to string 1046 miles of line serving 454 farms in Scott New Madrid Mississippi Stoddard Bollinger and Cape Girardeau counties. The REA plans nearly 3800 members and 2000 pending service applications with funds to extend service.
