Sikeston’s 1939 building year topped 150 residences and numerous business houses with total spending exceeding $800 000. Many homes were erected outside city limits, especially to the east and northeast, while each ward saw new houses completed. Plans for about 50 more homes for 1940 are in progress, with the northeast area set for further expansion.
Southeast Missouri Schoolmasters Association holds a special meeting at Sikeston high school auditorium with supper at the Methodist church served by Ebert Kready Missionary Society. Dr Frank L Wright will lead a panel on qualifications and powers of school boards. The event draws about 250 teachers and board members from Southeast Missouri. Local Community Teachers Association also meets at Sikeston high school study hall with Supt R A Harper in charge. Garland Parker chairs the association, part of the Missouri State Teachers Association.
A circulating petition urges extending the reciprocal trade agreements led by Cordell Hull before their June 12 expiry. Civic leaders in cotton regions endorse the effort, with Oscar Johnson of the National Cotton Council highlighting foreign markets as vital to the Cotton Belt. He warns that ending the program would threaten export markets, raise domestic production, and harm the national economy.
Civic figures including Dr G W H Presnell Kiwanis R A Harper Chamber of Commerce C Clarence Scott Lions Club A M Jackson and Frank Dye outline Sikeston Missouri’s projected 1940 population near 7500, attribute growth to neighborliness strategic location highways rail lines diverse farming and strong civic institutions. They emphasize housing expansion schools churches industries and community cooperation fueling continual expansion.
John E. Herlinger former Stoddard county assistant farm agent with Dexter headquarters moves to New Madrid to succeed Leslie B. Broom who resigns February 15 to enter the seed business. William C. Roberson, previously assistant at New Madrid, transfers to Dexter to fill the Stoddard county assistant agent role. No New Madrid assistant agent named yet.
Mrs T P Rafferty was transported by Eliise ambulance to St Francis Hospital in Cape Girardeau yesterday. She has suffered illness for an extended period and is receiving medical care.
The past week stood out as one of the warmest of the season with a low of 19 and a high of 48 degrees. Snow early Monday measured 5.14 inches. Forecast calls for warmer air and rain later tonight in this section.
The Herald dedicates its Fifth Annual New Building Review Edition to Sikeston men and women whose courage and sacrifice contributed to new homes for themselves and their children over the past year. Their example marks Sikeston as a town of good citizens building a better community.
Lieutenant Frances Pfeffer of Cape Girardeau will arrive in Sikeston this weekend to assume the duties of adjutant Captain J. N. Cannon of the 140th Infantry Missouri National Guard. Pfeffer will move his family to Sikeston after securing a residence. Cannon, from Caruthersville, will return there. Cannon has commuted from Pemiscot County since regimental HQ moved here last month. Several officers to be permanently attached to the HQ have not yet been named, says Colonel H. E. Dudley.
Mr and Mrs O M Arthur and Mrs Ruby Marshall were business visitors in St Louis on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Sikeston’s 1939 building surge saw the Sikeston Compress and Warehouse Company erect the largest plant, nearly doubling expected bale receipts in its first season. Nearby new facilities include Sikeston Coca-Cola Bottling on Front Street, Drake Auto Sales, and multiple service stations, cafes, and grocery outlets. Public works added the Sikeston Country Club, with several projects planned for the coming year.
Approximately $30,000 in stolen goods recovered by Troop B of the Missouri State Highway Patrol in 1939. The year saw 61 stolen cars valued at $25,685 and 58 lots of stolen property valued at $4,392. Southeast Missouri troopers aided 1,111 motorists, issued 6,584 warnings, corrected 17,561 car lights, and handled 25,634 cases. There were 2,805 arrests, 521 felonies, 456 accidents, 90 highway deaths, and 541,728 miles patrolled. Changes in Troop E included Captain A. D. Sheppard becoming acting Superintendent and Sergeant Rufus R. Reed promoted to captain and to Troop D commanding officer. Trooper Melvin Dace became Sikeston office sergeant. Additional troopers joined Southeast Missouri Patrol, with personnel listed in Sikeston, Willow Springs, Fredericktown, Hayti, Poplar Bluff, Dexter, Cape Girardeau, and Kennett. Walter Andres, patient at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, reported unimproved.
Sikeston veteran Dr Handy L Smith was elected president of the Southeast Missouri Dental Association at its two day meeting at the Hotel Marshall. Dr J L Lindsay of Poplar Bluff became vice president and O Wisecarver of Malden was re elected secretary treasurer. The gathering opened with an invocation by Rev John L Taylor and welcome from Mayor G W Presnell. Notable speakers from the University of Tennessee and Washington University attended, with a banquet at the Hotel Marshall Wednesday night. Many dentists from across the region appeared in attendance.
