Heifers and heavy yearlings over 750 pounds trailed by 50 cents to 1 dollar, lighter weights near steady.
Oscar Bedart co owner of a Highway 61 steakhouse pleaded guilty in Magistrate Court, was fined 25 dollars and sentenced to 60 days in the county jail for careless and reckless driving under the influence. Bedart, arrested December 23 near Highways 60 and 61, veered off the road into a ditch and nearly struck a transport. a doctor noted daily skin treatment from a WW II POW. Bedart sought leniency citing his welder trade and a job awaiting him, starting today.
Hospital officials issued a simplified rate schedule effective January 1. Ward patients pay six dollars per day, semi private eight, private ten, and private with both ten? twelve dollars daily. Major surgery adds twenty five dollars, minor surgery or obstetrics with general anesthesia twenty, minor surgery or medical with local anesthesia fifteen. Meals for nurses visitors private phones and special prescriptions may incur extra charges.
Sikeston Chamber of Commerce announces in this issue that Sikeston retail stores will be closed all day Saturday January 1 in accordance with the holiday closing agreement. The chamber committee urges full observance by all local merchants.

Scott county 4-H members received awards at a Benton meeting despite bad weather. Everett Milligan earned an eighth year award and a soil conservation medal plus a copy of I Dare You from Danforth Foundation. Mildred Crumbaugh, Verne Green, Rebecca Cochran, Leon Rister, Richard Kirkpatrick, Elia Marie Schiwitz and others received pins, medals, or Foley food mills for various 4-H achievements. Puppet show and lantern slides highlighted the program with club assistance from multiple towns including Benton Illmo New Hamburg and Diehlstadt.
Attendees at the gathering included Ziv, Voelker, Mrs. Kirsch and several other relatives as honored guests.
New county and district offices change hands as most incumbents win re election in November. Clarence Felker becomes Scott County Representative. J C Wallace moves to Chief Clerk of the House. Robert Dempster becomes prosecuting attorney. Clyde Poe named coroner. Lyman Harrison as county surveyor. Nina Bradford public administrator. Paul C Jones takes Kennett district post. R B Oliver III will be judge of the 28th Judicial Circuit. D W Gilmore shifts to State Senate. D L Joslyn resigns to circuit judgeship. All are Democrats.
Funeral services are set for 2:00 PM at Bell City Methodist Church for Alexander Holder 87 who died today at his son's Bell City home. Burial will be in Sikeston City Cemetery. Born December 28, 1861 in Caldwell County Ky he was a lifelong farmer. Surviving include daughters Mrs S M Buchanan Lilburn Ky Mrs Paul White Cairo Illinois, son William Holder Bell City, eight grandsons and one great grandson.
The past week started Friday with 30/34 temperatures and rose to 52 by Tuesday, then 39 appears Wednesday with a low 35. The period saw a noted morning low of 28 and total precipitation of 1.29 inches.

The fifteenth Annual Soils and Crops Conference for Scott County will be held Wednesday January 12 in Benton. The program centers on Soils and Crops Practices in a Balanced Farming System with reports on fertilizer demonstrations for cotton, corn and permanent pastures. County agents and specialists, including Wm J Murphy, will discuss best practices and varieties, plus pasture improvement and fertilizer demand for 1949.
