A Portageville woman, 44, Nellie Gladys Womack, and her 5 year old daughter Glenda Jean Womack were struck by a Greyhound bus as they crossed near Portageville after a Christmas church outing. The driver, Joseph B. Allen of Memphis, was cleared and continued his trip. The child sustained a possible skull fracture and other injuries but was reported in satisfactory condition at Delta Community Hospital.

United States District Judge George H Moore approved a major order granting trustee Guy A. Thompson authority to purchase 65 diesel locomotives for Missouri Pacific Lines. The 63 units are valued at $11,299,900, including 34 freight 8 passenger and 21 switchers, expanding diesel power to over 270 locomotives and enabling replacement of 113 steam engines with anticipated savings exceeding $1 million in 1950 and 1951.

Bridge Work Stalled East of Sikeston for Winter
Construction on two Route 60 bridges east of Sikeston is suspended by contractor Thomas J. Evans Jr. of Charleston until warmer weather. The plan allows winter nonconcrete work with concrete piling halted after completing pile driving for the St. John's ditch bridge. The temporary St. John's bypass and North Cut ditch structures remain in use, with traffic unaffected aside from paving between barricades. Funeral services were held for Patoa Ann Harington, newborn daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Harington.

Last Thursday the Very Reverend J J ONeill pastor of St Francis Xavier Sikeston and dean of Catholic churches in the Cape Girardeau area was informed from Rome of his appointment as Domestic Prelate to Pope Pius XII with the title Right Reverend Monsignor and violet cassock. The investiture will follow official documents. he is the only St Louis Archdiocese priest to receive the honor at this time.

Community Mourns Death of Local Young Businessman Doyle Cloud
Sikeston residents were shocked by the death of Doyle Penzil Cloud after a brief illness. Born in Okolona Ark in 1918, he lived in Dundee and Sikeston, served 43 months in the South Pacific, and was part owner and manager of the Dunn Hotel Coffee Shop. He married Laura Elizabeth Dover in 1946 and left behind three children, a wife, parents, siblings, and Rotary club ties. Funeral services with military honors were held at Sikeston Christian Church, followed by burial in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Veteran seeks job and home in Sikeston appeal
W L Rogers, 37, Canalou, a World War II veteran, appeals to local businesspeople for work and a place to live. He lives with his sister near Kluge's Hill but says she has 11 children and cannot host him. He was wounded in the war, has one kidney and part of his stomach removed, and says he can do all but very heavy work. The veteran has applied at the Sikeston State Employment Office but has not yet been offered a job. Mr and Mrs Oscar Carroll and Mr and Mrs James Moncabee were in St Louis yesterday.

Holiday Business Was Excellent at Sikeston Post Office
The Sikeston post office reports record December business with 287,680 stamp cancellations in the first 27 days, about 10,000 more than last December. The 19th saw 36,930 pieces. the peak day in December 1948 had 33,500 cancellations, not counting parcels or newspapers. Last Thursday’s newspapers included over 1500 pounds of Herald Christmas editions.

Hospital Patient Jailed After Auto Stealing Spree
Thomas Lewis McKee a 32 year old resident of Centralia Illinois is jailed in Bollinger county Missouri under charge of car theft. State Highway Patrol says he admitted the theft spree that began when he escaped from a veterans hospital in Danville Illinois. He stole cars in Georgetown Ill and Patton Mo and was arrested after driving a 1949 Ford. A 38 caliber revolver was found in the car and officers say he confessed to an armed robbery in Illinois Tuesday night. He awaits prosecution for automobile theft.
