Missouri plans widen and resurface 61 between Sikeston and New Madrid with a 24 foot pavement plus 3 foot shoulders, extending 20 miles to New Madrid. Six mile section south of Portageville also widened and resurfaced. Bids expected in 1–2 months for spring work.

Shortest Day Brings Wind and Rain Across Week
Yesterday marked the shortest day of the year and a windy one with nearly an inch of rain. The week shifted from warm spells to unsettled weather, with 1.17 inches last Friday and 0.74 inches yesterday. Temperatures ranged from a 19 degree low to a 69 degree high yesterday, then 36 this morning.
Two Morehouse Girls Injured Crossing Road
Two schoolgirls Betty Ruth Roach 13 and Mary Lou Roach 10 were struck by a southbound car while crossing the Morehouse Canalou road near the Morehouse intersection about 12 30 yesterday afternoon. Betty Ruth suffered a fractured left leg while Mary Lou had a head laceration a fractured right wrist and both were taken to Delta Community Hospital.

Fifty Candidates Initiated Into Local Moose Lodge
State Senators D W Gilmore and Yewell Lawrence spoke at the initiation of 50 candidates into the Loyal Order of Moose in Sikeston. About 350 members from Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, Caruthersville and Cape Girardeau attended. The Southeast Missouri lodges total 859 members, led by Sikeston with 360. A free fish fry followed.

Sikeston Showcases Finest Christmas Decorations
Mr and Mrs Roy V Ellise, en route from Sewanee Tennessee to Troy Missouri, praised Sikeston's holiday decorations. Ellise, former Sikeston public schools superintendent and now a University of the South instructor, told The Herald the displays were the most attractive he had seen and urged visitors from miles around to view them.

A tree fell on wires between Dexter and Poplar Bluff cutting connections to Sikeston from Wednesday afternoon until Thursday morning. The Southeast Missourian reports the lines were out of order from 3 p m yesterday to 11 a m today. Mr and Mrs B Y Owen and son Ronnie will visit relatives in Hopkinsville and Munfordville Kentucky for Christmas.

Six Dakota youths jailed in Charleston after cafe robbery
Six Dakota youths, four men and two women from Rapid City, SD, are jailed in Mississippi county Charleston following a Sunday night robbery of Cunningham's Cafe in Bertrand. After their car overturned on Highway 60 they were questioned by state troopers and later arrested in Cairo, Illinois. About 75 dollars was taken. Each posted 1500 dollars bond after waiving preliminary hearing. The group has a history of robberies across Wyoming, South Dakota, Kansas and Missouri.
