County's bond total increases in Sixth War Loan
Scott county's total in the Sixth War Loan reached 1 121 689 dollars at close of business Friday December 22 per a report to County Chairman C H Butler by the St Louis Federal Bank. Miss Alpha Athoff a 17 year old Commerce girl suffered serious facial cuts in a Christmas Eve crash on Malone avenue. A 1936 DeSoto driven by Alvis Theodore Francis of Charleston struck a parked Ford coach at the Highway Cafe. Francis was fined 15 dollars after police blamed fog and no windshield wiper for the collision.

Captain Caruthers A. Anthony, son of Mrs. Ruby Anthony and brother of Dr. W. A. Anthony of Sikeston, was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service in France. He directed extended Army Signal Corps wire nets to maintain continuous telephone contact across corps troops during August 31 to October 1, 1944. Before service, he worked for Indiana Bell in Indianapolis and lived in Sikeston in his youth.

New Court Session Changes Outline Swift Trials
Scott county circuit court will run continuously from the new year with a judge able to convene court at a moment's notice. Three annual sessions will be replaced by flexible sessions to speed trials for those held on bond or in jail after preliminary hearings. No formal dockets will be used. Henry Jones, ex Sikeston officer, was formally sentenced to 25 years for murder and will be sent to Jefferson City this week. Luther Glass and Vernon Chaney appeal two-year sentences after pleading guilty to operating a gambling device. Niels Tittle was fined 100 dollars for gambling charges. Gobel Owings, linked to the Nichols shooting, faces murder charges with a January 24 hearing set, venue change expected.

Former Matthews Man Killed in Action Capt. Ben Schwartz
Capt. Ben Schwartz formerly resided with parents Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Schwartz in Matthews and was killed in action in Aachen on December 38. Surviving are his twin sister Jane Ann and brother Frank, both in California, and his father in Decatur Illinois. The Schwartz family were longtime Matthews farmers before moving to Illinois where Schwartz studied at the University of Illinois after three years of service.

Third Oak Leaf Cluster for Lt Kenneth Hocker
First Lieut. Orvidle Kenneth Hocker of the Eighth Air Force based in England receives a third Oak Leaf Cluster to his Air Medal. He piloted a B 17 and took part in bombing raids on Hamburg Politz and Merseburg and supported troops over Metz and around Aachen. A Sikeston High School graduate, he worked at Harwell Auto Parts before joining the Army Air Forces in 1942.
