Farm Bureau Leader R. W. Brown Dies in Jefferson City
R. W. Brown longtime Missouri Farm Bureau Federation president died of heart disease at his Jefferson City home last night. A native of Australia he led the American Royal Livestock Show in 1910 and served as Farm Credit Administration director in St. Louis from 1934 to 1940. Brown, a Spanish American War veteran, lived in Carrollton and had been named president emeritus last month.

Heavy Holiday Business Reported in Sikeston Stores
Sikeston merchants describe the 1944 Christmas season as the biggest yet though merchandise quality is low and guarantees are scarce. Stores stay open late tonight and Friday and Saturday with crowds buying whatever they can, aided by high school students as clerks. The post office anticipates a mail rush, planning at least one Sunday delivery on December 24 and Saturday afternoon hours on December 23, with staff not scheduled to work on Christmas Day.

State to Study District's Subsoil
One of the deepest holes in Missouri is being drilled in central New Madrid County on land owned by R B Oliver Jr and others. The 2160 foot depth aims to reach 5000 feet to determine Southeast Missouri swamp soil composition and test a magnetic and gravity anomaly found by the Missouri Geological Survey. Charles Dement was elected president of the Sikeston District of Boy Scouts at the annual meeting in Sikeston. John Spence became vice-president and Frank Lin Struwe was named district commissioner. New operational committee members include Lyman Dale Tharon Stallings George W Kirk A. M Jackson Walter Steward and Dr H M Kendig. Southeast Missouri Area Council shows 34 percent membership gain for the year, with 12 percent of eligible Southeast Missouri boys in Scouting. 2676 Boy Scouts and 1026 Cubs now in the region. Cub Scouts up 39 percent nationally. New units organized in Sikeston district include two in Sikeston, plus ones in Charter Oak and Vanduser.

Joy and sorrow mingle as two local families hear diverging news
Pvt. Jack Shelby, missing in action since November 9, was reported returned to duty in France with the U S Infantry. Meanwhile Leonard Burgess, 21, son of Mr and Mrs A L Burgess, died in service aboard the U S S Cebu in the Pacific around November 10, with a chaplain noting the nation’s gratitude and prayers for the grieving family. Burgess enlisted in Batesville before moving to Sikeston area. Survivors include his parents, a sister Almeda Chapp, and four brothers.

Legion Auxiliary Activities Highlight December Meeting
Twenty six members of the American Legion Auxiliary met Tuesday night December 19 at the Dunn Hotel with president Mrs S L Schillig in charge. Hostesses were Mrs Clyde Poe Mrs Bill Henington and Mrs J N Hitchcock. Hattie Wilson rehabilitation chairman reported 11 Christmas baskets to be prepared for veterans families if possible. Thirty five packages and 80 dollars in cash were received for Gifts for Yanks Who Gave. Cash contributors include Buckner Ragsdale Company Kiwanis Club Lt Col and Mrs Co L Malone Sikeston High School Student Council Sikeston Herald Tanner Street Church of God. About 150 was cleared on the 25 bond given away by the organization. The bond was won by Jos L Matthews Jr. Mrs R A Green has been appointed 1ith District liaisonwoman chairman.

New Spending Record Set Across 1944 Consumer Buys
The Commerce Department reports 1944 civilian spending at 97 billion dollars, up 6 percent from 1943 and more than double 1939. Prices rose, but quantity bought also increased, though durable goods purchases fell 10 percent as prices climbed. Some items were scarce or depleted, including radios and inexpensive children’s clothing, with Christmas buying potentially draining stocks. Services rose mainly due to higher domestic help costs, while overall quality of services declined.

A. Max Hatfield of Cape Girardeau, executive of the Southeast Missouri Area Council of Boy Scouts, spoke at the Sikeston Lions Club Christmas luncheon at the Dunn Hotel. He outlined plans to enlarge Camp Lewallen for year round use, joined by H. E. Niswonger and Roy Ward. Entertainment was provided by Mrs. Elmer Poage, Mrs. M. L. Canedy, and Miss Betty Deneke. The club will meet again at noon on December 27.

Soldier missing in actions in Germany after flag sleep episode
Pfe. Arthur Brewer of Sikeston formerly worked for J A Sutterfield contracting, reported missing in action in Germany after serving with the U S Army's 28th Infantry. A War Department letter confirms his status. He sent his wife a Swastika emblem and four German dens bearing Hitler. Brewer and a buddy slept inside a 12 by 8 foot German flag rolled up for warmth. He had marched through Paris Belgium and Luxembourg, returning to Germany about a month before disappearance. He leaves wife Margaret Pratt Brewer and son Clifford Dale, 4, with parents Homer and the late Mrs. Brewer and siblings in Sikeston, Malden, and Los Angeles.
