Sikeston shoppers packed stores amid brisk last minute buying as 1940 rivaled peak postal volume. Post Office reports Friday handled over 23 000 letters and cards and hundreds of packages with delivery planned for Christmas morning.
Capt Loomis Mayfield of the Sikeston Home Guard announced a meeting at the armory in Capt Wade Shankles office next Monday night. Instructions from Capt Shankle will be issued then as the Home Guard prepares to begin drill after the National Guard unit departs for Camp Robinson. The current focus is on perfecting the organization.
The Sikeston Herald reports printing and selling over 15000 Christmas cards for local residents, making it a peak season. Stores struggled to stock cards as demand rose and the post office handled rising holiday mail with evident satisfaction despite busy duties.
The 1941 Missouri automobile license tags, white on black, go on sale December 26 at Lair Mattingly Service Station. 1940 plate holders may buy on December 26. others must wait until January 2, 1941. Buyers of state auto trailer and truck plates must bring titles. A $3 fee applies to new and used car purchases, and old plates must be transferred. State patrols have arrested many motorists for violations, with fines often exceeding transfer costs.
Mr and Mrs J H Vowels observed their sixty fifth wedding anniversary on December 24 at their North Stoddard Street home. Mr Vowels turns ninety next March and Mrs Vowels is eight years younger. They recently dined with daughter Mrs C S Tanner and family. They are parents of nine living children.
Workmen will begin installing machinery this weekend in the Scott County Milling Company’s new 100000 dollar grain elevator, nearing completion. The unit will hold 330000 bushels and be ready for grain loading by mid January, with full operation following after minor remaining work.
A truck-load of groceries donated for Lions Club Christmas baskets was part of the Food Matinee held at Malone Theater last Saturday. Over 800 children attended, with theater manager Pete Medley and Coca Cola plant manager Milburn Arbaugh among organizers and Lions Club members including E F Schorle J W Foley Loomis Mayfield M M Beck Ted Kirby Carl Wedeking and Herb Walton in the photo.
More than 500 refurbished dolls await delivery by Santa on Christmas morning to underprivileged girls. Sikeston Boy Scouts repaired them, Woman's Junior Chamber of Commerce dressed them, Lions Club aided the effort. 1500 other toys also prepared. three trucks depart Coca Cola building at 9 a.m. for north, south, and Sunset addition routes with distinct Santa crews.
L. T. Davey, Alva Garner, J. E. Harper, W. E. Henington, Loomis Mayfield, Harry Holmes and C. R. Auten appear among organizers. South truck features Elmos Taylor as Santa Claus with Charles Dement and others. Sunset Addition truck lists Maurice Armstrong as Santa Claus plus a roster of participants.
More than 800 children attended a charity matinee at the Malone Theater. They gained admission by bringing food for the Lions Club Christmas aid. An inventory shows 230 cans vegetables 160 cans preserves and jelly about 35 pounds onions two bushels apples and oranges one bushel sweet potatoes two bushels Irish potatoes 70 sacks of rice and other items. The Lions will distribute to churches preparing baskets for hungry families.
Sikeston markets list No. 2 wheat at 78 cents per bushel and corn varieties at 48 to 50 cents per bushel. White and yellow corn are quoted, with white snap corn at 49 cents and yellow snap corn at 48 cents. Hens sell by the pound, fryers at 14 cents, leghorn hens at 6 cents, and roosters ranged from 4 to 8 cents per pound.
Missouri National Guard Company K members who mobilized for training will be honored at a 7 30 P M farewell party at the National Guard Armory. Program director M E Montgomery will act as emcee with a Legion Auxiliary sponsorship and a variety of speakers. The event will feature the regimental band and a volley of tributes from civic leaders and a company member to be chosen.
A National Guard company reports three square meals for 125 soldiers with sizable rations including 70 pounds of sausage 30 dozen eggs 62 pints of milk and 75 pounds of potatoes across breakfast noon and evening feeds. The piece notes heavy eating amid Army life and mentions kitchen detail and dishwashers learning by practice.
Members of the Sikeston Lions Club and Boy Scout Troop 43 attended a Lions Club dinner at Palace Cafe last Wednesday night. Cubs aged 12 soon to be inducted into the Scout troops sat with their sponsors on both sides of the table. Arthur Sherwood of St. Louis spoke as banquet chief, joined by local Scout executive Harold Nootz and other civic leaders. Troop 43 trophies and blue ribbons decorated the table, reflecting the Lions sponsorship of the unit.
Robert Garner a 16 year old Matthews boy remained in critical condition with unchanged status a week after sustaining knife wounds at a tavern north of town. Police say motive involved an argument over a girl with fellow youth William Lawder who surrendered and is jailed in Benton awaiting a January 2 preliminary hearing.
Mr and Mrs Roy Hollifield near Sikeston welcome a daughter born December 20. Mr and Mrs N C Ancell near Commerce announce a son born December 20 named Jerry Norvell.
Richard Day of Memphis will be a guest in the Elmos Taylor residence during the holiday season, according to local notices.
Ninety nine enlisted men and four officers of Company K mobilized at the armory for several days en route to Camp Robinson Little Rock Ark for a year of concentrated training. Col Harry E Dudley commands the 140th Infantry Regiment in Sikeston with about 1500 men. New Year holiday adds to furloughs. New Year’s Day leaves extend to Wednesday. The day focuses on medical exams fingerprinting and initial drill as First Lieut. Carl Wilkinson leads training and a two mile hike.
Capt. C. B. Root announces a brief Christmas break for the 85 Flying Cadets in training at the air school with a possible extension to Thursday. Cadets begin leave after 5 10 Tuesday, return by 6 pm Wednesday or Thursday if extended, as all operations shut down on Christmas Day.
