Local Woman Hunter Kills Eight-Point Buck in Ozarks
Mrs W B Malone Sr of Sikeston is likely the only woman to bag a deer among hundreds of hunters in the Ozarks last week. She killed an eight-point buck near Sullivan, Mo, weighing about 200 pounds, while sitting by a tree at 7:15 Thursday morning. She had joined her husband and son Buddy on hunts for four seasons but this was her first shot at a deer. The buck approached after a nearby doe and a male followed. Malone fired a 12 gauge shell at the forehead. the shot passed through the mouth and neck. Two other Sikeston men, Jess Hamby Sr and Jess LaFentress, also hunted but did not bag deer. Hamby finally killed a deer after a long chase near Bloomsdale. Missouri Conservation Commission reports at least 1,100 deer killed by about 1,700 hunters, with later totals possible. Eugene Blackburn of Chamois is credited with the largest bag, an 8-point buck weighing 231 pounds dressed. In Ware, Illinois, 47-year-old Joe M Cummings died after a headon collision between his truck and a Mid-West Dairy Products Corp truck on Illinois Highway 1. The other driver was C Dempsey Craft of Cape Girardeau. Cummings died about 31 hours after the crash, in a Ware hospital. Funeral services were held at Murphysboro for Cummings. He is survived by his wife.

Sikeston council requires underground oil tanks citywide
At a special meeting the Sikeston city council amended an ordinance to require all oil tanks of 500 gallons or more within the city to be placed underground with tops at least one foot below ground. It ordered strict enforcement of the existing rule that above ground tanks be surrounded by a watertight wall equal in capacity to the tank to prevent leaks, noting few tanks already meet the requirement. The council also sent $100 to the Charleston fire department and $50 to the New Madrid fire department for help at last Friday’s Ferrell Oil Co. fire.
