Officers and sergeants of the 140th Infantry Missouri National Guard will attend a school of instruction in Sikeston on Sunday December 15. Over one hundred officers are expected to participate as mobilization plans and camp facilities face delays across the National Guard and selective service programs.
After a week of temperatures dipping below freezing once, Southeast Missouri faces much colder weather tomorrow as rain turns to snow tonight or tomorrow. St Louis may see five to ten degrees below normal, though Southeast Missouri’s cold wave should be less severe. The week recorded a low of 29 degrees last Friday and a high of 59 on Monday December 9, with about half an inch of rain total.
Sikeston shops buzz with Christmas goods as downtown streets receive evergreen festoons and colorful lights. The post office decor was funded by a summer cold drink stand, profits covering the decorations. Stores report heavy shopper traffic and optimism for a strong season this year.

Sikeston merchants debate when to start Christmas week shopping nights. Most expect to stay open next Thursday night, with a final decision due within a day or two.
Frank Shadoin built a tiny replica city inside a five foot fence at 414 Wilson street using lettuce crates and scrap lumber. The model includes a shoe factory, mill, post office, city hall, and a manger scene, all fashioned from memory without plans.
In St Louis on Tuesday the U S Circuit Court of Appeals denied the National Labor Relations Board petition to withdraw recognition of Western Brotherhood of Shoe and Rubber Workers at International Shoe Company plants in Hannibal. The court ruled the board's May 9 1939 order lacked substantial evidence to support findings against the company.
The Christmas rush has begun at the Sikeston post office and will be in full swing next week, says Postmaster Pleas Malcolm. Some cards and packages have already been mailed, including foreign mail, though Nazi-dominated countries are largely off the holiday list. Officials urge early mailing and careful wrapping to ease handling and meet December 25 delivery.
During the past week about 710 bales were ginned, bringing the season total to 5710. Roughly 15 percent remains in the fields and may stay given current weather. Snaps quoted at 7.5 cents per pound and seed at 20 dollars per ton.
General G C Brant head of all Army Air Corps primary training schools visited Sikeston Monday to inspect facilities and operations. He arrived at 9 30 in a Douglas bomber with Captains Storrie Clinch and Root stating satisfaction with progress before departing for Randolph Field Texas. The tour included Florida schools and the Sikeston detachment led by Oliver Parks of Hast St Louis.
Dwight Warren, who has been visiting at the home of C. C. Pinnell for three weeks, traveled to St. Louis on Wednesday to visit his daughter Miss Edna Warren. He plans an extended stay in Bushnell, Illinois, with relatives thereafter.

A total of 12,384 bales of cotton were ginned in Scott county from the crop of 1940 prior to Dec. 1, it was announced today by Tharon J. Stallings, special agent of the Bureau of the Census. During a similar period of 1939, a total of 20,483 bales were ginned in Scott county gins.
The Sikeston Home Guard, now 20 members strong, will meet at the National Guard Armory to elect a captain and first and second lieutenants. Known as Company I of the Sixth Missouri Infantry, it forms part of eight contingents in the 140th Infantry National Guard area. Members listed include Loomis Mayfield and Harry Kirk among others. The unit will drill weekly and serves without pay, replacing National Guard during Camp Joseph Robinson training.
Frederick T. Allen a 22 year old cadet from Columbia Missouri was injured in a plane crash during a forced landing near the Sikeston airport He was on a solo training flight about 45 minutes into the course when the Stearman PT 17 engine failed and the plane struck a wheat field northwest of the main Missouri Institute of Aeronautics field He was taken to Sikeston General Hospital with severe but not critical injuries including a forehead laceration and a broken nose A board of officers will investigate the crash which occurred at 1115 am on Wednesday and was the school s first major accident Allen had about 45 hours of flight time and had recently joined the school s second class with graduation planned in less than two weeks He is the son of Mr and Mrs E D Allen of Columbia and his mother and sister traveled to be with him.
