More than twenty bales of cotton have been ginned in Sikeston this season signaling an early start as crop readiness improves. Seed cotton is stored at gins planning to begin operations next week with weather shaping picking plans set for Monday morning. The first ginned bale is by Grover Baker at Sikeston Gin Company and two more by Planters Cotton Company for D. and P. L. variety grown by John Harper on Phillip Banks land south of Sikeston.

Dismissal of Crowder District Farmer Crone Charges
Charges against Dinsmore Crone of Crowder were dismissed by Prosecuting Attorney David Blanton after a hearing before Justice of the Peace William Smith. Crone admitted firing a shotgun at youths who were tick-tacking his window to frighten them off. Carl Brewer, 12, was treated at Sikeston General Hospital and returned home with no serious injuries.

Classifications in Draft to Be Posted
Scott county draft age men classified so far will find their status posted on the courthouse bulletin board in Benton. Wayne Buckhanan, clerk of the county Selective Service Board, said the classification will now be posted as soon as determined. The next draft call is for 13 white men on September 24, with names announced around September 10. To date Scott county has sent 152 men under the Selective Service Act, 128 of whom were accepted and are on active duty.

Illinoisans surprised at fine Missouri crops
Mr and Mrs Walter Rapp and son of Gridley Til and Mr and Mrs O Gibbs and daughter of El Paso were guests of Mrs Rapps brother Fred Geske near Canadoa over the weekend. They came from leading corn states and were surprised by promising crops in southeast Missouri and by the variety of crops and livestock pastured in the area. The Geskes and two children Gale and Doris returned from a two week visit to Illinois and Iowa, where crops were reported inferior to Missouri. In Illinois they attended the Geske family reunion at Bloomington, the boyhood home of Mr Geske.

Lightning strikes cause barn and hay losses in Southeast Massouri
Heavy Monday night rain brought relief to farmers but sparked lightning damage. At Morley a Chester Black barn and 2000 bales of hay burned. Near Oran, 4000 bales of straw on Ef. P. Coleman farm were destroyed. Several minor strikes reported district wide with fast-burning straw in fields.

New Air Class Grows to One Hundred at Missouri Institute

NYA May Build REA Warehouse
H M Zarkor superintendent of the Scott New Madrid Mississippi Cooperative Association says he has sent to the Rural Electrification Administration a proposal by the National Youth Administration to furnish labor for the cooperative’s new office and warehouse. NYA would provide all labor while REA supplies materials. About 1,500 homes are now lit by power carried from Sikeston municipal plant over 642 miles of line in Southeast Missouri. Three crews are working: one reading meters for September bills and two making connections as wiring is inspected and approved.

Helen Treadway, daughter of Mr and Mrs Tom Treadway, received treatment for minor injuries Tuesday morning after a car driven by James Lawson of Cape Girardeau struck her bicycle on Highway 60 near the airport. Lawson’s vehicle hit the bicycle as it met another eastbound car, tossing the rider to the road. She was taken to Dr M G Anderson’s office for treatment of minor facial cuts and bruises.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Kewanee for two year old Charles Sidward Duncan son of Mr and Mrs Harold E Duncan of Morley. He died at Sikeston General Hospital after a truck wreck on the Kewanee lane causing a basal skull fracture. The child born September 6 1939 in Kewanee. Interment followed at a nearby cemetery with Albritton service.

W E McCarty owner of Sikeston Coca Cola Bottling Co and leading Cairo business figure died Tuesday night after a long illness. Funeral set for three o clock tomorrow at his Cairo home with burial in Thistlewood cemetery Mounds. Born in Wadesboro Kentucky he would have turned 63 on September 4. He moved to Cairo at 28 and built a bottling operation into three plants Cairo Carbondale and Sikeston employing over 100 with 30 trucks. Survived by wife Katherine married 1920 and daughter Sally.

About 2740 officers and men of the 40th Coast Artillery Brigade Anti Aircraft will bivouac at Sikeston and nearby Chaney subdivision en route from Fort Sheridan Illinois to Lake Village Arkansas for summer maneuvers. Lieut. G W Davis said plans may change and that detailed notices will follow. The Fifth Infantry Division will pass through Sikeston en route from Fort Custer Michigan to Dudley Arkansas arriving Wednesday afternoon for camp near Dudley.
