Sikeston Hosts Army Unit On Parade
Sikeston attracted a major Army encampment as more than 10 000 soldiers from the 40th Brigade Coast Artillery plus the Fifth Division trooped into the area. Army trucks tents and anti aircraft lights transformed Sikeston into a temporary military city drawing hundreds of local visitors. The 103rd and 61st Coast Artillery units planned maneuvers from Fort Sheridan to Lake Village with a convoy stretching over 75 miles and 700 vehicles. The mass movement included 739 vehicles and nearly 9 000 men en route to Pine Bluff for war games with other troops. Local dairies sold milk to soldiers and civilians watched the Jeep roll by. The column then moved toward Paragould and Walcott as it continued toward Camp Robinson for summer maneuvers.

Cotton bale brings over hundred dollars
J Wm Foley displays what is described as a record bale of D and P L 12 cotton grown near Sikeston. The 1710 pound bale, valued at 118.52 dollars, was bought by E P Coleman & Company, with seed payments covering ginning costs and leaving a balance of 7.98 dollars. Cotton seed now brings about 40 dollars per ton.

One Man Hurt As Trucks Collide
An early morning crash on Highway 61 three miles south of Sikeston injured one man. A southbound Ohio driver Ysseldyke collided with Warrenton of Harrisburg Illinois, causing Warrenton to suffer a broken left ankle and cuts as his cab was demolished. A third truck driven by Fred Forbey of Memphis was involved. Forbey’s truck belonged to Kimbal Truck Lines of Cape Girardeau.

Morehouse Youth Dies After Ditch Diving Accident
Samuel Gray twenty of Morehouse died in a St Louis hospital after a July dive into a drainage ditch west of Morehouse. He struck bottom, fracturing his neck and paralyzing his body. Survived by mother Mrs Lulu Gray and brother Pat Gray. Funeral arrangements pending.
