Sikeston city water use rose to more than twice normal during two hot months. Superintendent Charles Moose said deep wells remain adequate for emergencies and residents may use water freely. The surge mainly funded lawn and garden care to prevent losses amid the extended heat.
Arnold Poole a 52 year old transient farm laborer was fatally injured Sunday night when struck by a westbound truck along Highway 60 near Morehouse. The driver did not stop and may not have known he hit someone. Poole’s son George was with him as they walked east near the pavement edge. They had been living in a tent nearby. Funeral services were held in Bloomfield Tuesday with interment there. An inquest was deemed unnecessary by Deputy Coroner Pres Hearne of Stoddard County.
Mrs Tiarry Dudley sustained a fractured right ankle while visiting Andersonville Georgia. She is receiving treatment at Fort Benning Base Hospital and expected to remain for two or three weeks. The accident happened during a ladies and children’s Georgia visit as Cal Dudley Major Tanner Dye family members and children were sightseeing. The Dye family and Dudleys returned home Tuesday night.
Scott county draft board clerk Wayne J. Buckhanon says a tentative bid for 13 white men is set for September 21. The prior call on August 1 sent two replacements to Jefferson City. More calls loom as recently registered 21-year-olds are fully classified.
Wheat No 2 priced at 1.00 per bushel. Corn white No 2 0.72 per bushel. Corn yellow No 2 0.66 per bushel. Oats 0.35 per bushel. Hens 0.10 to 0.15 per pound. Roosters prices not listed. Leghorn hens priced at 0.10 per pound.
Mrs John Alsup of Hayti visited Monday with her son Frank Lowery and his wife.
Funeral services for Jacob Marion Sittes, long time Sikeston farmer, were held at the family home on North Kingshighway with Rev. John L. Taylor and Rev. E. H. Crear officiating. Interment followed in Sikeston Mausoleum. He died Sunday night at 9:30 after a long illness. Surviving are his wife Anna Whitener Sitzes four children and several siblings. Numerous out of town relatives attended from Marquand Fredericktown St. Louis and other cities.
More than 100 Southeast Missouri young women attend the Young Women's Auxiliary house party at Sikeston Baptist church. State leaders led by Dorothy Sparks join guests from Illmo, Bernie, Perryville, and other towns for talks, study, and entertainment through Saturday noon.
Mr and Mrs Anderson Hayden and their baby Lars visited Sunday with their parents Mr and Mrs Eli Williams and Mr and Mrs J H Hayden Sr in Cape Girardeau, sharing time with both families.
H. A. Bridges, 61, of Charleston, was struck by a bolt described as a ball of fire that hit his left temple, traveled through his body and the dog he was petting, killing both. The incident occurred after a light rain and flashes of lightning. Bridges, born January 6, 1880, had moved from Casey Station, Kentucky, to Mississippi County about 20 years ago, and recently retired from farming after building a house in Charleston. He leaves his widow and five children: Thomas and Raymond Bridges, Iridna Badges, Susie Nelson, and Beulah Herring, with services held Saturday.
Ferrell Oil Company on Highway 60 is installing weighing scales this week to weigh coal as it prepares for a coal agency this fall. Coal dealers in the area are busy taking advance orders for fuel that will be essential in coming months.
The first cotton of the 1941 season was ginned at Sikeston Gin Company after being picked yesterday on Grover Baker farm north of town. The D and P L variety was brought in early, about a month before last year. Warmer spring enables early planting and ginning may start at other local gins within a week or two. Farmers warned against picking too early to avoid green cotton that does not gin well.
Hannah Allen known as Aunt Hannah, claims to be 112 years old born in 1830 in Madison county and was a slave in Henry Wernecke’s family. She and her husband Rev W T Allen, 83, live in Fredericktown and traveled to Sikeston despite last week’s severe heat, a testament to endurance for their ages.
Glenn L. Poe launches Sikeston Motor Co a DeSoto and Plymouth dealership located on Highway 61 at the Whiteway Service Station. The firm displays both car lines and invites free demonstrations with sales and service available continually. Poe formerly managed the Lesem Millikan Motor Co in Cape Girardeau bringing 12 years of motor firm sales experience.

James Newman Ross longtime Sikeston groceryman and community figure died Monday at St Marys Hospital Cano TL after a brief illness and emergency operation He retired earlier this year as manager of McKnight Keaton Grocery Co born November 5 1865 in Sharon SC he moved to Sikeston in 1917 and led the local wholesale branch to prominence Surviving are his wife three children two sisters and brothers and five grandchildren plus a great grandchild Funeral services were held at Sikeston Baptist church with several out of town relatives in attendance.
Robert Lee Warren, 16, son of Mr and Mrs Harry Warren of near Badgett, was released Tuesday from Sikeston General Hospital after injuries from a traffic accident on a road from Harvey Parks Airport to Highway 60. He fell from a moving truck driven by Harry Warren Jr while riding on top of the cab, suffering possible concussion and severe bruising to his left shoulder.
Lawrence Cleek of Farmington began duties as manager of the local A P Food Store last Friday, succeeding Clyde Matthews who led the store for years. The Cleeks reside at 421 Harris Avenue. Cleek previously served four years as assistant manager of the J P Food Store in Farmington and has broad grocery experience.
Mrs Othia Walker returned home from Charleston on Sunday after visiting Mrs Frank Carnell.
Sixty nine cadets at the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics finish primary training as US Army aviators and depart for Brady and San Angelo Texas to begin basic instruction. The next class of 110 is due August 19 to 21 for flying instruction starting August 23, Capt. RC Rockwood said this morning.
Sikeston residents welcomed Tuesday night’s cool air after a prolonged heat wave but rain failed to follow. Cotton stands once among the region’s best 60 days ago are burned and dying as no general rainfall has fallen for over two months. Cape Girardeau and nearby towns reported heavy showers, but Sikeston only saw a light drizzle. Temperatures reached 105 degrees Sunday with 100 degree days for a week, though the cooler spell offered temporary relief.
