More than 250 stockholders guests and personnel attended the fifteenth annual Sikeston Production Credit Association meeting at Sikeston high school gym yesterday from 10 am to 3 30 pm. It was described as the largest and most satisfactory session in fifteen years of operation with a higher attendance percentage than before.
At yesterday's PCA gathering, lunch included 150 pounds of barbecue 50 dozen buns 10 gallons of ice cream and 15 dozen ice cream bars. The spread signals a healthy financial structure and satisfied stockholders as they enjoy a substantial meal.
Members gathered as the association announced its best six months yet with $992,728 loaned on 388 approvals by July 1 and over $1,040,000 loaned by Aug 1. Membership reached 947 in Scott, Mississippi, New Madrid, Stoddard, Butler, Bollinger and Cape Girardeau, with stockholdings and government shares shaping future ownership plans.

Simpson Oil Company marked its twenty fifth anniversary, tracing growth from a single August 1923 station and one truck to a vast network serving Southeast Missouri. It operates 18 bulk plants, 150 dealers, many service stations, six tow boats, 37 barges, four river terminals, and runs Colonial Tavern at Cape Girardeau. Chili Simpson, former Missouri University football standout, heads the firm and recently received a Merit of Honor from Missouri University alumni.
Donald Wayne Mills, three, son of Mr and Mrs John Mills, of seven miles north of Lilbourn on the Lilbourn Morehouse road, is in critical condition at Sikeston General Hospital from head injuries after his father backed the family car. The child was in the path of the vehicle when struck Saturday morning about 7 30. X rays Monday showed skull fractures as the left rear wheel ran across his shoulder and head. The left front wheel avoided him due to the wheels turning sharply right.
Six Sikeston men pleaded guilty in Sikeston Magistrate’s court to gaming with dice for money and were fined $10 each by Judge M. E. Montgomery. Roy Sims, an early teen, held for circuit court on felonious bicycle theft of a $60 bike belonging to C. L. Blanton Jr. James Toney of Lakeview Inn fined $10 for obstructing traffic while under the influence. Jack Hutson fined $10 for disturbing the peace at Lakeview Inn. Orville William Krapf pleaded guilty to driving with inadequate brakes and was fined $10.
W. C. (Smoky) Sutton is named manager of the Sikeston branch of the E. C. Robinson Lumber Company. He assumes the position after being employed by the company.
County committees were chosen Tuesday evening at Benton for Scott and Mississippi counties with differing party officers. Scott Democrats re elected H D Rodgers as chairman while Scott Republicans named Eugene Potashnick as chairman. Mississippi County Democrats picked Abner Beck as chairman and Republicans named Joe Thomas as chairman. Cape Girardeau Democrats listed Jack Oliver as chairman with Edna Schrader treasurer and Millersville address for Mrs Estes. Charleston residents held other roles.
Highway 67 between Poplar Bluff and Fredericktown will open to public travel at noon Saturday after twenty-two miles of new concrete highway were constructed. Division engineer Gwin advised motorists to drive with care as crews finish shoulder work and seeding. The road has been closed since June 4, 1947, with southbound detours via Highway 61 to Patton Junction, Highway 51 to Fisk, and Highway 60 to Poplar Bluff.
Sutton succeeds Felix Byrd, who has returned to Greenville Texas, taking the helm at the local company since last May.
Commander Charles H. Butler reported that over $1000 has been raised from Sikeston merchants and others toward a $2500 goal for Legion Park’s WWI and WWII memorial. Donations expected soon as plans call for park work to start by Sept 1, with merchants urged to send checks to Butler or Herb Walton. the city will provide $2500 in labor toward a $5000 project.
The Woman's Civic Club announces its annual fashion show on Wednesday September 1 at the Armory starting 2:00 PM. Thirty models will present old and new fashions with Paris and New York lines, including furs from Leppert Roos. Notables from New York Chicago and St Louis attend. tickets on sale at The Elite Shop or via club members.
The Federal Reserve Board in Washington reports that 28 percent of families in the United States are spending more than they are making. It notes plans to curtail easy payment purchases as soon as it is announced.
Buildings owned by James Lomax on the street and near the railroad are being torn down or moved this week to widen the roadbed into Matthews. The action affects a restaurant run by Mr and Mrs O K Mainard and the Lomax Garage. The State Highway Commission awarded grading and sand asphalt surfacing of Matthews Lane a mile long from Highway 61 to Matthews to Penzel Construction of Jackson.
Palmer Kiser a 24 year old lineman for Southern Line Construction Company of Memphis fell from the top of a 35 foot electric wire pole south of Charleston. He suffered a broken vertebra and was taken to St. Mary's Hospital in Cairo Illinois. His condition was described as good.
Fred Atchison aged 47 of Cape Girardeau died after a car driven by Arch Ward of Cape Girardeau crashed near Mount Vernon Illinois while returning from a motor service school. Ward survived. Atchison formerly served as service manager for Walton and Williams Motor Company in Sikeston. Funeral services planned in Cape Girardeau Saturday. survivor includes wife and one son.
Six thousand people jammed St Patrick's Cathedral in New York for the Babe Ruth requiem mass while 75000 attended the subsequent services.
