Drowns When Boat Overturns on Wappapello Lake
Roger Dixon Proctor, a Sikeston resident for five years, drowned when his outboard boat overturned on Wappapello Lake Monday night. Five others escaped, including Mrs. Paul Jones, Miss Betty Brown, and W. R. Lewis of Sikeston. Lewis washed overboard but the women aided by life preservers saved Brown. Proctor’s body was recovered noon Tuesday. Three Sikeston men, Wm. Woehlecke and his son Bill, and Far! Martin, helped in the rescue. Proctor, born December 23, 1899, of Mount Vernon Indiana, lived in Sikeston with his wife and daughter. He worked as a blacksmith for Alis-Chalmers. Funeral services were held at Welsh Funeral Chapel in Sikeston before burial in Mount Vernon.

Big Inch Pipeline Starts Second Year Of Operation
The Big Inch oil pipeline from Longview Texas to the New York Philadelphia area enters its second year. It has delivered 96,292,000 barrels of crude, equivalent to 23,000 tank cars, on an 18 day cycle, aiding U S war and industrial needs, says Harold L Ickes petroleum administrator.

Supreme sacrifice by district men in war deaths
Telegrams from the War Department report the deaths in France of Capt. Thomas Kelly and Corporal Ernest L. Smith. Kelly, born in Sikeston, reared by Mrs. Olivia Osburn, a Rolla School of Mines alumnus, and a ground engin eers unit member, died July 26 after more than two years overseas. Smith, a Sikeston resident and driver for Hitt Taxi, died July 29 in Italy of jaundice and hepatitis at age 23. He is survived by his wife Cornice Maloney Smith and five sisters.

Freed brothers in war claim both lives and injuries
Pvt Hershell G Freed, 20, was killed in action in England on April 28 after being reported missing. He had served in the army two months and overseas since January, previously employed at Curtis-Wright Aircraft in St Louis. Survived by parents Mr and Mrs A M Reed and siblings. Brother Pvt Paul Freed was wounded in New Guinea, receiving hospital care and expected home soon.

Weather forecaster Coen Sexton filling in at the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics says renewed rain across the district will continue today and tomorrow after the first widespread rain since May 6. Sikeston logged 1.15 inches, with 96 degrees the week's high and 70 degrees the low. Cooler air is expected through Saturday, with Sunday forecast as fair and warmer.
Former Airport Worker Killed in Action in England Channel
War Department telegram confirms Pvt. James Ro Baiyrus 21 of Sikeston area killed in action April 24 after overseas service since February. He previously worked at Missouri Institute of Aeronautics after Morehouse high school. Earlier missing notice followed by brief death confirmation. Lack of Insurance on Cattle Costs Lives and Loss
The Herald reports an advertising feature by C Clarence Scott Insurance Agency explaining cattle losses from a lightning strike. Six of twenty cattle owned by W H Schuerenberg, near Sikes ton, died around 3 am on July 26 during a rainstorm. Cattle valued at about 60 dollars each, with no insurance, left Schuerenberg about 50 cents per head on the six. A lightning strike hit a nearby tree about 100 yards from the herd as the cattle sought cover, with photographs showing the animals nearby before dying.
