The award cites leadership in Italy and Normandy, with Bradley also receiving an Oak Leaf Cluster for training the First Army, directing its Normandy assault, and the Cherbourg drive.

Sikeston city council ordered Sunset streets named and houses numbered to extend mail delivery to the Sunset Addition Negro residential district. Postmaster Pleas Malcolm notes mail must have named streets and at least one mailbox per building before service begins.
Plumbers working downtown cut an underground cable feeding the white way lights causing a several hour outage while some street and house lights remained on. City light plant crews repaired the damaged line and restored service late at night.
Col Edmund W. Sterling longtime head of the White House detail of the U S Secret Service died in New York last week at 69. Funeral services were held August 4 and burial followed at Arlington National Cemetery after cremation. Sterling guarded Presidents Wilson Harding Coolidge Hoover and Roosevelt and also investigated about 50 crank letters daily.
Mrs. Fred Smith and granddaughter Martha Ann Jett of Tampa visited friends this morning, coming from Morehouse where they stayed with Mrs. Anna Blaylock and Mrs. Ida Parrish. They will return home Saturday. Franklin Schake of Marthasville is guest of Parker and David Rowe this week.
Mrs. W. L. Philips of Sikeston learned by War Department telegram that Pvt. William Leonard Phillips was killed in France on June 19 after previously being listed missing. A 1943 marriage to Odie Bell Hicks and a life spent in Southeast Missouri preceded his overseas service starting last March. Survived by wife and baby son, his parents, a brother Jess Phillips, and three sisters Mrs W E Bailey, Mrs Hubert Witt, and Mrs Marian Mansell.
A Japanese battle bayonet captured by Lieut. George T. Johnson and presented through officers reaches Capt. Mayfield of Sikeston State Guard. The weapon, sent weeks ago to Mayfield, was displayed in The Herald show window as a souvenir. Johnson, serving in the Southwest Pacific, had given it to Lieut. Pace before Mayfield received it.
Ten pickers, four graders and owner P. J. Ponder operate at the Ponder orchard east of Sikeston harvesting Elberta and Hale peaches. Over 600 bushels have been picked and sold locally. after today no pickings until next week, with harvest likely ending by week’s end.
The 35th Division, including Southeast Missouri's 140th Infantry, is commended for Normandy action. The order, dated July 19, names the division for its stand and role in the St Lo advance on July 18. Major General Ralph E. Truman historically commanded the unit. Maj. Gen. Charles H. Corlett signed the dispatch from Normandy.
Scott county subscribed 192 percent of its quota in the fifth War Loan Drive. County Chairman J S Kevil of Sikeston says the final total is 1 274 403 dollars, about 192 percent of the 663 300 quota. Ee bonds bought totaled 378 632 dollars, about 111 percent of the 333 300 quota, surpassing all eight neighboring counties in the boot heel area. Stoddart county reported 119 percent of its quota as the next highest.
RW Sizemore, owner of the Sizemore Tin Shop, buys two houses on Scott and Trotter streets from Watton & Williams Motor Co for 5000 dollars. One six room home north of the Nazarene Church will be remodeled for the Sizemore family. a four room house moves to Delmar street for rental. The tin shop will relocate to a brick building on the north end of the Scott street property, larger and modern.
Memphis reports U S cotton farmers have produced about 27 billion pounds of war materials from the 1942 and 1943 crops. The total includes 2.49 billion pounds of cotton seed oil for food and 12.12 billion pounds of lint cotton for 11,000 military products.
Mrs Margaret Harper Mrs Nora Dudley Mrs Grover Baker and Miss Florence Baker were guests yesterday of Misses Caroline and Isabell Hess at their country home near Portageville.
Staff Sergeant Lewis A. Graham of Blodgett and Company K of the Missouri National Guard was killed in action in France on July 5. A War Department telegram to his parents confirms the death and notes a follow up letter. Graham had been in France since June after landing in England May 30, 1941. Memorial services are set for Blodgett Methodist church August 6. Graham is survived by his parents and 11 siblings, plus two brothers in service, with memorials referencing prior family wartime losses.
Surgical patients at Sikeston General Hospital this past week included Mrs H J Stalcup Metropolis Ti Mrs Naomi Chandler Bloomfield Walter Chandler St Louis Clyde Gregory Morehouse and Mrs O D Henning Sikeston The medical patients during the week included Fred Thurston of Vanduser.
Mr and Mrs J Welles of Marston welcomed a daughter at Sikeston General Hospital on August 4. Mr and Mrs William Fennell of Sikeston announced the birth of a son at the local hospital on August 4.
Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus returns to the road in Akron Ohio with about 2000 spectators for its first open sky performance since the July 6 fire that killed 167. President Robert Ringling says the show is unchanged except aerial acts now take to higher altitudes under the sky.
Mr and Mrs Standley Woods travelled to Cape Girardeau on Wednesday for their daughter Linda Darlene to undergo a tonsillectomy. Accompanying Mrs Burl Heath and Mrs Frank Dye.
The Sikeston Municipal Light and Water Plants report a combined net profit of 23887.37 for January through June. The Light Plant sold 5922870 kilowatt hours for 99700.23 while the Water Department sold 86026500 gallons for 20941.93. Superintendent Charles Moose notes rising operating costs about 50 percent and a staffing challenge due to inexperienced workers, with the Board of Public Works guiding the system since its 1932 founding.
Sikeston fans saw two nine inning games as Cadets faced International Shoe Company and Mechanics met Salcedo with both games ending 5-5 and 6-5 after nine innings. Tonight two matches on the schedule include Instructors versus State Police and Headquarters versus Fabiek Brothers with two games slated for Friday August 11 featuring all star civilian and military personnel against Dexter and Sikeston all stars against Cairo B 1. Finals set for the third week in August.
The Eastern Star Birthday club will meet next Wednesday, August 16, at the Rustic Rock Inn. Mrs. Charles Stearns, Mrs. Frank Dye and Mrs. Wm. oehte cke will serve as hostesses.

Meteorologist Mannat Albert Klamm of the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics predicts 95 to 100 degrees Friday and Saturday, with cooler weather Sunday. Scattered showers are possible Friday and Saturday amid limited humidity relief.
