Sikeston city council met Monday night August 12 to award the contract for paving Moore avenue from Wakefield to Wallace avenue. R S Houge of Springfield received the $3 554.72 bid for concrete paving and work is to begin soon. The meeting also began steps toward zoning ordinance drafting with aldermen named to assist City Attorney Dempster. Two bids on hospital bonds were reviewed with no action. Baum Bernheimer Co of Kansas City offered to pay par plus accrued interest and cover legal and printing costs with rates 2 percent on 1941 to 1950 bonds and 2 1/2 percent on 1951-1952 bonds. Bank of Sikeston offered 3 percent with optional early retirement.

Swimmer Dies After Dive Injury Near Portageville
Jessie Huffman a 30-year-old Portageville resident died in a Cape Girardeau hospital after breaking his neck in a floodway ditch dive ten miles north of Portageville. Witnesses said Huffman slipped on the board during several dives and struck water four feet deep. He was paralyzed yet conscious before dying from the injuries. This followed another similar accident last spring when Lester Foster of Portageville suffered a neck break from the same diving board.

Two Foreign Cars In Accident Friday Near Sikeston
Two out of state cars collided south of Sikeston on Friday morning in heavy rain. C. F. Akers of Salem Illinois and his wife were southbound on Highway 61, attempting to pass Roy Harris of Marietta Georgia driving a truck and trailer. Akers lost control, struck the truck, overturned, and the truck jackknifed. No one injured. neither driver deemed at fault.
