Fifty five members of Company K 140th Infantry of the Missouri National Guard depart at 12 33 oclock Saturday for Camp Clark near Nevada Missouri for two weeks summer training. They travel via Cape Girardeau on the Frisco Railroad join a National Guard train then proceed to Hoxie Arkansas pick up units and switch to the Missouri Pacific for Camp Clark. The Sikeston company returns Sunday afternoon. Capt Rufus R Reed and a list of officers and privates follow.

WPA Street Work Continues in Sikeston
City engineers report curb and guttering on New Street from Gladys to Murray Lane finished yesterday with paving of the Gladys to William segment slated to begin Tuesday August 16. Work includes Franklin Street curb, East Gladys Street improvements, paving the alley from New Madrid to Kingshighway, and sidewalks around the Ralph E Bailey and South Grade School buildings. Property owners may secure sidewalks at material cost by contacting City Engineer Harvey Johnson.

Manager Medley Halts Theatre Panic at Malone

Negro Boy Accidentally Shot In Sikeston Cabin
Henry Smith Jr. a 74 year old Negro boy died after a .32 rifle shot by his brother L C Smith at their cabin 12 miles northeast of Sikeston between 8:30 and 9:00 AM. The three boys 9 to 12 years old had been playing with the gun behind a door. Authorities deem the shooting accidental and no action was taken. The gun belonged to their uncle Frank Shields and the body was taken to Welsh Funeral Parlor.

Husband of Sikeston Woman killed In East
The body of James Garfield Gordon, 54, killed Monday night in Pittsburgh when his motorcycle hit a truck, will arrive today in Albrrton ambulance with Hunter Albritton who accompanied the body. He will be taken to Clarksdale, Mississippi, for interment as family members travel for funeral services. Mrs Gordon and Lynear Carter will accompany the body. Gordon had worked as a dragline worker at Cairo and had recently moved to Pittsburgh in search of employment.

First Open Cotton Boll Found Saturday
The Herald reports the first open boll of 1937 cotton found by Grover Baker on Saturday morning in a field north of Malone Park. The D. & PLL variety showed multiple open bolls, including a stalk with three. Hez Ozment brought the first boll to The Herald office on August 12. John Manor Sentenced to Life for Grays Point Killing
John B Manor a 35 year old Cape Girardeau man arrested in Colorado three weeks ago pleaded guilty to first degree murder in Scott County circuit court Benton and was sentenced by Judge Frank Kelly to life imprisonment Manor who escaped the Scott county jail over two years ago was the third man given life terms in the May 1935 killing of W Tom Carlton at Gravys Point He later admitted being present in the robbery and shooting with three others McGee Payne and Carter and was sent to the State Penitentiary in Jefferson City He waived extradition and returned to face trial for the Carlton murder along with other criminal cases and parole decisions were reported.
