Sikeston Chamber of Commerce will meet at Rex Theatre at 7 30 PM Tuesday to discuss the Southeast Missouri Jubilee planned for September 30 and October 1. Major C L Malone urges broad attendance as plans include entertainment, parades, a tent display, and a musical festival with high school bands.
C L Malone of Sikeston was chosen as chairman of the Scott County Republican committee at a Benton meeting Tuesday night. Elected officers include vice president Mrs Christa Grace and secretary Miss Leona Tirmenstein with treasurer W I Tomlinson. Members elected from townships include Everett Dye, Leona Tirmenstein in Moreland. W L Tomlinson, Formfelt in Kelso. William Foster, Maud Daugherty in Morley. Ed Blaylock, Goldie Parman in Sandywood. A G House, Mrs A G House in Tywappity. Paul Halter, Mrs Paul Halter in Sylvania. Owen Alexander, Ida Hawkins in Commerce. C C Mal Jones, Anna Winchester in Richland. Sikeston.
Otto Schoen of Fornfelt was re elected chairman of the Scott County Democratic Committee at a Benton courthouse meeting Tuesday night. Re-elected officers were Mrs. C. L. Blanton Sr of Sikeston, vice-chairman. Mrs. Lora McLean of Oran, secretary. and H. F. Kirkpatrick of Benton, treasurer. The next meeting was set for Thursday night August 26 with all county Democratic candidates to be present.
Wm F Woehlecke of Sikeston Greenhouses will leave Sunday to serve as a judge at the Missouri State Fair flower show in Sedalia on August 23 and 24.
During a Thursday rainstorm lightning struck the Sikeston Auction Company's barn causing a broken meter and blown bulbs. Arley Phillips at Home Oil Company was jolted while taking a drink and the Sikeston Ov Company's station suffered wiring and bulb damage.
The Sikeston District Boy Scouts financial drive for 1938 ends Sunday August 21. Chairman Wilbur Ensor says the district quota is $750 after a committee decision to fund camp Lewallen improvements. Attendees at the finance committee meeting included Lee Bowman Bill Keith George W Kirk and Frank Chase of Cape Girardeau. The public's support is gratefully acknowledged and further favors are appreciated.
Mrs Walter Reed of Dexter acknowledges the reward check for proposing the name Southeast Missouri Jubilee for Sikeston’s two day celebration on September 30 and October 1. She thanks the presenting committee and confirms Dexter will attend. The reward was split between Mrs Reed and Mrs Sadie T. Cates of Parma.
Philo LeSieur of Point Pleasant was re elected chairman of the New Madrid County Democratic Committee Tuesday. The Republican county committee chose Merrill Spitler of New Madrid as chairman with Mrs. E F Sharp as vice chairman. Ray mond Lloyd of Lilbourn is secretary and Mrs I L Parrott of Lilbourn treasurer. Mrs Parrott was named as the party's candidate for county treasurer W W Frewerd and his wife are spending this week at Tron Mountain Lake.
Reports from Sikeston say Charles L. Blanton Jr and Leon Groves, both suspended last week for irregularities in WPA work at Charleston, will be reinstated within days. James Brown, also suspended, to bear penalties if WPA rules were broken. No official WPA statement yet on findings or punishments.
George Dye Jr will open Steaks House on Malone avenue at Kingshighway next Saturday. The modern eating establishment, built to serve many patrons, features an experienced chef to prepare steaks and handle other orders. Located adjacent to the Dye Hotel, the venue aims to specialize in quality steaks.
J F Cox Jr who ran the Marquette Hotel Drug Store the past year and a half sold that business to join Home On Company operated by his father J F Cox. They plan to move to Sikeston after securing a residence. Previously he managed Cape Girardeau terminal of the Potashnick Trick Service.
Last week Roscoe Foster sold his residence on East Lake street to Conn Armour. The dwelling with a half acre lawn will be improved and additions made and will be used as a home for the new owner. An orchard with several varieties of fruit trees accompanies the property.
The Herald argues reward for arresting WPA corruption should be cash paid to honest officials. It cites Sikeston election interference by WPA staff, calls for a house cleaning of the federal agency, and urges relief funds be managed by trusted, honest people.
The week opened with a 96 degree high last Friday and fell to a low of 62 last night. Slight rain totaled ten hundredths of an inch as a warming trend is forecast for the weekend. Miss Berniece Hagemann, visiting Mountain Grove and St Louis, will return to Sikeston on Sunday.
Maier Auto Supply under P. J Schlosser will relocate to 112 South Kingshighway opposite Ore Service Station on September 1. The firm will continue serving customers during the move and promises improved parking and better service once settled.
Construction began this week on a new seed house for the E P Coleman Cotton Company near the gin in the southwest part of town. Carter Foster is in charge of construction. The facility has a capacity of 18 1800 tons.
Robert Rafferty resigns as Continental Oil agent in Sikeston district and begins duties as Shell Petroleum agent in the same area. He replaces John Martin, who enters the Festus petroleum business. Rafferty, with six years at Continental, will supervise sales at Rafferty Service Station, Rafferty Sisters, H. D. Sweet Station, and six other stations in Sikeston and nearby towns.
County clerk Harry C. Watkins Jr. directs judges and clerks from the recent primary election to collect warrants for services at the election. Warrants are three dollars each and may be cashed at par at the Bank of Sikeston or the county treasurer's office.
A Sikeston fire incident unfolded Tuesday when a Model T Ford driver fueled the tank at a local service station. A lighted match by a boy caused ignition, flames engulfed the truck, a mop try failed to smother the blaze, and by morning the truck burned but still ran after being started. Nearby, Frank Clinton and Herbert Randy rushed to move another vehicle and saved the Clinton car from damage.
Melon shipments via Frisco and Missouri Pacific from this section will total about 2000 carloads, a substantial rise over last year. Prices range from 360 per carload, with loadings at Sikeston Charleston Bertrand and McMullin. McMullin stays strong while Sikeston and others decline. Some loadings may continue until September 1. Wesco Foods cash market closed after three weeks, buying 456 carloads. Indicated Missouri melon production up about 40 percent to 4,550,000 melons, averaging 350 per acre, with variable growing conditions.
John B. Manor 35 a convicted murderer bored through the ceiling and dug at walls of his Scott county jail cell in a desperate bid to flee to freedom. He used a bolt from the toilet seat to loosen a bunk rod and reach the ceiling, but his plan failed when he was moved to Jefferson City the next day. Manor had previously escaped with Claud McGee in 1936. this time he faced life in prison after sentencing the prior week.
Work began Monday on enlarging show windows by about a quarter and finishing the front in green carrara glass at the Peoples Store owned by Nathan Yoffie. Completion is expected in two weeks. store remains open during construction. Guests from Dickinson North Dakota Naperville Illinois and Mt Vernon Pennsylvania visit the Samuel Gastons over the weekend.
