Five Cars And A Rowboat Stolen By Fugitives In Missouri
Two convicts escaped from Bloomington jail and seized five cars and a rowboat in a trail across Missouri. Philip Robert Busick and Earl Willard Fines were arrested Tuesday morning by State Troopers H. J. Turnbull and P W. Scott in New Madrid and turned over to Sheriff Adam Hoffman for prosecution.

Work started this week on widening the north side sidewalk of Center street to ten feet east and west of the Young building. The project uses Works Progress Administration labor. New walks on North New Madrid street between North and Center streets are completed and in use.

New Engineer At Highway Office In Sikeston
F. J. Pat Noonan began duties as Division Engineer at the State Highway Department in Sikeston, succeeding A. R. Towse who has held the post since July 1932. Noonan, previously construction engineer in Division No. 10, has worked with Missouri highway projects in the southeast. Kemper Bruton of Sikeston was elected president of the newly formed Southeast Missouri Public Safety Council at a Hotel Marshall gathering. Thirteen organizations joined to form the council with a goal to include 37 groups. $5 annual fees set, incorporation planned, and a secretary to be appointed. Cape Man Receives Seven Year Perjury Sentence
Thomas McGee of Cape Girardeau was convicted of willful perjury by a Benton circuit court jury and sentenced to seven years in prison. The trial, presided by Circuit Judge Kelly, spanned most of the session after the jury deliberated half an hour. McGee testified at his brother Claude McGee’s December trial for murder at Gray's Point last May, where Claude was convicted and sentenced to death. Claude’s appeal is before the State Supreme Court.

Chafee Man to Be Tried for Manslaughter

Banquet Draws 128 At Scottish Rite Event In Mississippi
More than 128 members of the Scottish Rite and allied Masonic groups from Scott Mississippi and New Madrid counties attended the Hotel Marshall banquet Tuesday night. Dr. Arthur Mather of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Missouri spoke on the history and principles of the organization. Ralph Bailey of Sikeston acted as toastmaster, with Mayor Presnell welcoming guests and James Skelly replying. Music by an orchestra directed by Paul Slinkard and performances by several women complemented the program.

A sharp north wind chilled Southeast Missouri to about 33 degrees this morning as early spring trends briefly reversed. Despite green growth and blooming fruit trees, residents hurried for shelter.
