An elderly man in Lambert England faced a court summons seeking a contribution toward the maintenance of a son born to a woman he married two years earlier. The defendant testified he did not know of the child’s existence at the time of marriage, lamenting the obligation as “hard lines” while acknowledging past foolish action. The magistrate questioned the risks of marrying widows as the case unfolded.
