The government moves to seize 33 000 acres of desert land via condemnation for the Elephant Butte irrigation project with a civil case in Socorro before Judge M C Mechem. The Victorian Lind Ontire Co owns the land with ties to Bakerstiels Land and Cattle and estates in California and New York. A large sum is expected to be spent opposing the government as the case involves dam site rights reservoir railroad right of way and multiple tracts.
A Washington dispatch reports the 1908 pension disbursement reached 161,973,703.77 dollars for the year ending June 30 1909. Secretary Ballinger notes the roll continues to rise despite deaths and credits new legislation for the increase. The cumulative pensions since 1866 total 3,015,082,513.73 dollars with many names added after the Civil War and later conflicts.
Sheriff sale in Sierra County to satisfy a promissory note judgment dated 1900. Auction set for December 18 1909 at Hillshare four miles southeast of the county seat. Property includes 300 cattle and 40 horses and mules described by brands and connections. proceeds go to pay $130.06 principal and accrued interest plus $145 costs, with interest to date.
In Sierra County New Mexico the sheriff will sell December 18 1909 at noon at pasture near Hillsboro all cattle to satisfy a judgment of 3469.58 plus costs and interest and expenses. The sale describes brands Cross connected Pole M connected Wt X Slash ANA connected D connected end A bar connected and includes two hundred head of cattle.
The sheriff of Sierra County will sell the defendant Frank Hacker's interest in property in Hillsboro at the county courthouse on December 4 1909 to satisfy a judgment of 1196 95 with interest and costs. Property includes blocks 60 65 and 37 in Hillsboro townsite with improvements and adjoining pasture. First publication October 29 1909.
Notice from Van Horn Trading Company agent William C Kendall that cattle and horses mortgaged by M. E. Williams Edna May Williams and J J Willlady and E L Williams under notes of 1907 1909 will be sold at auction November 20 1909 at Engle Sierra De New Mexico to satisfy $4828 45 plus interest and costs. Turkey track brands will be sold first with attorney fees 10 percent and costs. If funds do not cover full amount remaining rights of Williams to run the brands may be released.
William C. Kendall as agent for Joyce-Pruit Co. will sell at Engle New Mexico on November 20 1909 at 10 AM at the Railroad Yards cattle mortgaged to cover 1687 59 with 12 percent interest and 10 percent attorney fees plus costs. Brands J7 and I7 to be offered first then brands and rights of M B Williams and F L Williams to satisfy any remaining balance. First publication October 1 1909.
