Weekend Oktoberfest opens in Legion Park with three day events
The three day Sidney Oktoberfest begins with opening ceremonies attended by city officials. A 240 foot tent, the longest in Nebraska, hosts German Mexican and bakery foods with concerts and youth activities from 10 a.m. daily. Special souvenirs include 200 dozen steins 500 silver buckets and 144 tankards with 72 tankards for Saturday sale and rest Sunday.

Open House for Western Nebraska Cosmetology Program
Western Nebraska Technical College will host an open house Sunday at the old Marathon building 909 5th Avenue from 1 to 5 p.m. Instructors Marie Novell and Floy Stuss and students will conduct tours of the new facility as the state’s first public school cosmetology center opens. Fall classes begin Monday with registration at 9 a.m. Enrollment is capped at 30. minimal entrance requirements include 10th grade completion and age 16. The 2,100 hour program covers shampoos, hair styling, facials, manicures, permanent waving, curling and scalp treatments. Future plans include curriculum expansion and a hair fashion seminar for local shop owners.

Carter signs farm bill amid reform and budget clash
President Carter signed the broad farm and food stamp reform bill in the Rose Garden. The measure, expected to average about 44 billion dollars a year, faced a price tag near 300 million above his preference but received support from farm state senators and includes food stamp reforms to target need and curb abuse. Attendees included Sen Robert Dole and Sen George McGovern with Marian Lenzen among guests.

Western Technical Community College Area Board of Governors affirmed the railroad maintenance program viability at WNTC. About 60 officials from 10 Panhandle counties toured Cheyenne County to view grass seeded roadside rights of way cutting maintenance costs.
