Farmers Dig Trenches to Save Corn From Frost Loss
Farmers battle a fierce heat wave and impending frosts by digging trenches and pits to store unripened corn. The Blue Valley Creamery Institute warns a 25 percent crop loss is possible north of a line from northwest Oklahoma to Philadelphia by October 15 without silos or trench storage. Pit silos are circular pits 15 to 20 feet deep and 12 feet wide, trenches are wide, sloped, root-cellar like. Above ground silos are better but below ground types offer low cost and quick fill, with clay soil favorable if deep enough and groundwater avoided. Farmers already use windlasses or pulleys to hoist silage.

Important topics at C of C meeting discussed
At a regular high school course discussion Prof Liebendorfer noted many students are drawn to Sidney schools for the advantages of the Curtis agriculture program. Parents prefer students remain closer to home, finding Curtis agricultural college and the Smith Hughes offer a sound preparatory base in agriculture, animal husbandry and farm mechanics, though less comprehensive than Curtis.

State Attorney General Answers Farm Bureau Head
Attorney General Spillman expressed surprise at a Farm Bureau statement by Secretary C B Steward alleging collusion by Omaha terminal elevators and grain firms to extort charges from Nebraska producers. Spillman notes the point is covered in the office brief opposing the Omaha grain exchange injunction and cites the 1906 supreme court decree prohibiting dealer combinations in restraint of trade.
