Winter wheat takes hold in Cheyenne County amid dry topsoil
Extension agent Ken Sakurada reports the winter wheat crop has emerged across Cheyenne County despite 50 days of very dry surface soil. Subsoil moisture remains adequate, and many farmers are planting near the Sept 10 optimum date. He notes low risk of wheat streak mosaic but warns of potential cutworm problems and EPA insecticide approvals for spring. Other crops like pinto beans and field corn show mixed yields and drying timelines as harvests approach.
