Cheyenne county faces questions over financing rising prisoner costs from liquor law violations. Prisoners with fines work on county projects to credit days toward their fines, with labor replacing cash payments. Boss S. R. Maley tracks time as a crew of over a dozen men cleans fair grounds and roads, while inmates receive no pay and earn credit for each day worked.
The Sterling Tigers host Sidney in the first game of the season amid a long running series dating to 1919. Sterling relies on a heavy veteran line led by Kious and Captain Edwards, while Sidney counters with a fast light lineup built around five lettermen. Fans are urged to attend and send off the teams as Sterling seeks to avenge a 6 to 0 defeat from 1927.
Foreman D Swinn and a five man crew of Northwestern Bell repair a 0 miles toll line from Sidney to the Wyoming state line. The line carries long distance wires Sidney to Cheyenne via Potter and Kimball and will be rerouted through Kimball to avoid trees. Plans call for 345 new poles 685 existing poles and 256 crossarms with completion expected late November before bad weather.

Adolph Joseph Schubarth a 70 year old farmer from northeast Potter county was struck and killed by a passing auto two miles west of the Bentley ranch on the Lincoln highway Saturday night He had one arm and was beside a tractor driven by his son Herman Schubarth who had left him in Sidney to fetch supplies The auto failed to see the man and ran over him as he stood beside the road during darkness The son followed after driving back to assist and investigate
Word from Omaha details two generations rising within Union Pacific. William M. Jeffers, a former call boy who joined at 14, becomes general manager at 52 while N A. Williams, once a farmer boy and section hand, is named general manager. Retirement of E. E. Calvin clears the path as Carl M. Gray announces the moves. Calvin will serve until October 31, marking a long career rooted from youth to VP.
Guy Wiley foreman of the section east of here and Mexican track worker Edward Rodriguez were fined 200 each and costs in Cheyenne county court for operating a still and selling liquor. The still was in an old box car in the local yards used partly as living quarters for laborers. The entire east section gang, all aware of the still, were discharged. A local inspection found mash contaminated with magots, described as a disgusting sight in a bootlegging setup.
The federal trade commission report shows Mrs. John D. Sherman of Estes Park Colorado, former president of the General Federation of Womans clubs, was paid about $600 a month by the National Electric Light Association through an ad agency to write rural living articles. Her work supported a $100,000 a year rural advertising program promoting farmer electrification while she led the federation which received $78,008 home survey funds. Bruce Barton was paid $5,000 to draft pamphlets praising service and rates for broadcast to millions. Oxley testified about 40,500 reprints of a Herbert Hoover speech distributed to utility companies, arguing state versus federal regulation of electric utilities. Elders of the Mormon church from Utah have for weeks distributed religious tracts and interviewed Nebraskan residents in western counties. The drive aims to recruit members with meetings planned in homes. In Scotts Bluff County the effort has already secured enough membership to establish a regular church, part of a nationwide campaign.
The Sidney Woodman troop of Boy Scouts gave a fine demonstration of their progress before Woodman lodge members at the hall on Wednesday evening September 12. W. S. Robinson, who led the scouts through the summer, has reason to be proud of their accomplishments. The troop received a large flag at the close to be used in all ceremonies.
County Clerk Henry Paviat and Highway Commissioner John W. Billeter returned from Lincoln where they discussed road maintenance and improvements. Rees & Kennedy of Dalton won a 1.8 mile Lincoln highway gravel contract east of Lodge Pole at 3.94 cents per square yard. A second 7.6 mile stretch Lodge Pole to Chappell in Dever county was also let at 3.94 cents per yard totaling 3782.40 dollars. Lincoln highway traffic at Sidney faces dispute over left turn restrictions at the main intersection of Tenth avenue and Illinois. State highway officials say the rule is confusing and may force routing changes. Billeter conveyed the department’s view to the city council last Friday.
Peetz Colorado district presents a non competitive grain and vegetables display at the Cheyenne county fair occupying a main building space and drawing strong visitor interest. The exhibit, arranged by the Peetz community fair organization, emphasizes agricultural progress with finely grown sheaf grain and produce. Delbert Hawkins and Leonard Pike of Peetz show swine and other stock entries with many blue ribbons earned by Peetz entrants. Neighbors from the south are praised for their spirit and support of worthwhile community events.
Howard Madden and Miss Nora Wittrock, prominent Potter youths, wed at Scottsbluff on Wednesday September 12. Howard, a south divide farmer and son of Mr. and Mrs J H Madden, and Nora, daughter of Mr. and Mrs H B Wittrock, northeast of Potter, plan to move to Mitchell where Madden works in a sugar factory.
