Cheyenne County reports a strong 1959 winter wheat start with most fields up and growing well. Timely rains and sunshine boost early root development, while Panhandle and eastern Nebraska plantings adjust to conditions. Nebraska leads in hay and alfalfa, ranks high in corn and sorghum, with robust expected crops statewide.
Nebraska sets 1959 Soil Bank rates at 9.50 per acre for Cheyenne County andPanhandle counties, below state average of 12.50. The program aims to curb crop surpluses with a state goal of 506,000 additional acres, while individual farm rates follow county and land value limits.
The Lincoln fall conference of the League of Nebraska Municipalities heard Sidney City Attorney Larry Clinton discuss eminent domain and compensation. Also present were Sidney City Manager Murrey Fuller and North Platte Mayor J. L. Keenan, who is the new president. Governor Anderson promised to push tax law revisions in January and warned a perfect tax law is not achievable quickly.
The Plains Drive-In Theatre will close after the evening show on Monday September 29. The final night features Away All Boats with Jeff Chandler and Julie Adams and 10 000 Bedrooms with Dean Martin and Anna Maria Alberghetti. The Plains plans a spring 1959 reopening.
The annual TB Christmas Seal campaign will begin November 14 in Cheyenne County. Sidney club representatives Elizabeth Schwasnick and Edna Dedrick attended a Scottsbluff district meeting where western Nebraska leaders reviewed local seal sales against state and national figures. Health education chairmen met to plan materials and promote the TB control program ongoing for over fifty years. Nebraska TB donations support rehabilitation for patients at facilities including Kearney Hospital for Tuberculosis Lincoln State Hospital Beatrice State Home.
Millard Musil’s band from Sidney and western Nebraska won a National Ballroom Operators Association citation for neat appearance wholesome entertainment and top dance music. Other Nebraska bands honored include Little John Beecher Preston Love and Eddy Haddad with Musil’s personnel listed as Delmar Knight Rose and Deen Hart from Potter along with Dott Arnold Muehling Barker Hinn and Nelsen of Sidney.
Mr and Mrs Phil Etherton announce the death of their son in law George Kretz from a heart attack at his Vallejo home. He died Saturday night. Funeral arrangements are incomplete. The Ethertons will travel tonight to join their daughter Vivian for an indefinite period.
La Verne Tarpenning was arraigned before County Judge C W Smith on Thursday charged with a second offense drunken driving and reckless driving. He pleaded not guilty and was placed under a $100 bond to appear for trial on Sept 23. Tarpenning was involved in an accident south of town recently.
Sherman Adams will address the nation on radio and TV at 6 30 p m to state whether he will quit as presidential assistant. Newsmen expect an resignation announcement as the White House sought 15 minutes of air time for his message on KSID Sidney.
Female prognosticators outguessed men in The Telegraph weekly football guessing contest. Connie Morrison won 10 prize by counting 15 correct of 20 games. Six runners up had 14 correct with several upset picks noted.
Curley Doggett remains in a Omaha hospital after three skin graft surgeries for burn injuries from a Kansas racing crash. About 40 percent of grafting is complete and two more operations plus physical therapy are expected. A benefit race in Oxford, Nebraska, raised funds. Henry Olesen of Olesen's Body Shop in Sidney will collect contributions to help with medical expenses.
Scottsbluff High School faced a fire estimated at five to ten thousand dollars that started in a boiler room basement and the first floor. Chief Ralph Johnson led fire crews to control the flames as classrooms suffered smoke damage while the building was to reopen. Deputy State Fire Marshal Fred Otte investigates possible arson.
The University of Nebraska Board of Regents may establish a soil testing laboratory in western Nebraska. Dean William W Lambert of the College of Agriculture will be invited to the October 3 meeting to discuss the plan. Regent J LeRoy Welsh of Omaha pushed to explore Midwest leading soil testing facilities and noted potential private funds to support the program.
Nebraska announces three wildcat drilling locations Bedrock Oil and Gas Co Hill No 1 in Sec 9 16 51 to start around November plus Bedrock Meads Banner County site. McDaniel Drilling No 1 Marks near Tool Field and Raymond Oil No 1 B Carlson spudded Sept 20 at 4190 feet. Other new Nebraska sites include Petsch Kimball County fields and Banner County Olsen Lewis Braden Russell Chandler & Simpson and more in multiple counties.
Sterling Colorado news reports construction of a 475000 dollar wing at Logan County Hospital will begin early next year. The addition adds 36 beds for nursing home and minimum care patients, expanding capacity to 87 total beds. United States Hill Burton funds and Logan County funds finance, with a three mill public works levy funding about 180000 annually. Remodeling will follow the wing’s completion and is not included in the estimate.
A State Bar Assn committee urged close watch on any oil and gas conservation bill in the next Legislature and to attend hearings if needed. The 1959 draft bill would require hearings and appeals in the county of the real estate involved and call for a qualified lawyer on the commission. The group also proposed rules enforceable by law, with penalties, and a scheme for non residents to appoint the secretary of state as agent in Nebraska oil and gas activity.
Cheyenne County Fair Board calls a meeting for Tuesday at 7 30 PM in the 4-H Building at the fair grounds. Superintendents and assistants of all divisions are urged to attend to discuss rough spots from the 1958 fair and plan improvements for next year.
Sidney Chamber of Commerce board met to outline a busy schedule including a wheat show with possible Chancellor Hardin as speaker, an oil progress dinner on October 18 at the Youth Center, and a bus trip to the Colorado Nebraska game on October 25. Они also considered rebuilding city road signs, seeking a soil testing laboratory in Sidney, and possible University of Nebraska site support.
A break in at Western Ice warehouse in west Sidney saw entry gained via a second story door when glass was removed. Intruders opened a large safe by knocking off the combination. only two dollars in pennies from a desk were stolen. Investigated by Deputy Sheriff Kermit Brumbaugh with Chief Herb Edwards and Sol Willis assisting.
