Commissioners Set Meeting in Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County commissioners will meet in regular session Tuesday to discuss current interest on county funds in banks and raise the minimal rate. LeMoyne Johnson will report on county coyotes and damages from the predator control program. They will consider a grant request for lights and sirens for sheriff cars and possibly a tape recorder for police use. An offer on the Weed Office on Summit Drive will be reviewed along with correspondence from Educational Lands and Funds and a salary raise for Dorothy Brei. Highway Superintendent F B Thompson joins to discuss labor and equipment rental for concrete box culverts to replace county bridges.

Campaign Begun By United Fund In Sidney

The 1973 Sidney United Fund Drive opens with advance gifts letters mailed to top donors. The goal is 18000 dollars, up from 14000, with the National Arthritis Foundation added. Follow up drives include business, then door to door starting Oct 1, benefiting Boy and Girl Scouts, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Mentally Handicapped Residency Fund, Arthritis Foundation, National Travelers Aid, USO, Sidney Day Care Center, and Muscular Distrophy Foundation.

Upland Officials Tour Sidney Growth Plans

Enrollment News Shows Decline in Local Schools

Report by Gail Bergstad notes Cheyenne County schools have higher graduating classes than incoming kindergartners. Overall enrollment trends downward with predictions of continued decrease. only Dalton reports an uptick to 206 students from last term.

Enrollment trends across Dalton Gurley Lodgepole Potter and Sidney schools

The report shows varied enrollment changes in several districts. Dalton up seven percent with 14 Kindergarten, largest Freshman class of 20. Gurley total 133 with Juniors 24 and Kindergarten up to six. Lodgepole total 154 with Sophomores 20 and Kindergarten nine. Potter total 174 down from 190 with Seventh grade 20 and Kindergarten five. St Patrick 132 for grades seven to 12, down 20 due to a large prior graduating class. Sidney Public Schools 125 Seniors and 120 Kindergarten, largest seventh grade 154 and smallest third grade 111, with overall decline but leveled off outlook.

Imminent Transfer Planned for Hiram Scott Building

Dr. B Varner, University of Nebraska president, says title to the Hiram Scott library science building will transfer to the NU Board of Regents within 30 to 60 days. HEW's Kansas City office is sending deed papers to Washington for final signatures.

Cold Snap Brings Freezing 37 in Sidney and 38 at Scottsbluff

A high pressure dome over central Nebraska produced clear skies and unseasonably cold readings with Sidney near freezing and Scottsbluff at 38 by mid morning. Northerly winds dominated east and central areas while western winds were southerly. By Tuesday warmer air is expected as the high moves east.

UNL Swine Judging Team Takes Seventh at National Barrow Show

The University of Nebraska Lincoln team placed seventh in an intercollegiate swine judging contest held with the National Barrow Show in Austin. Team members Dale Magnuson Laurel and Gary Kubicek Wilber were 10th and 12th high individuals, with coach R B Warren and Bobby Moser leading teammates Neil Betty Geneva Joe Larson Larry Linden Christine Votan Steve Becker and Dick Helms from various Nebraska towns.

Nebraska June sales outpace state growth in 1973 report

Nebraska retail activity remains strong in June with non agricultural indexes rising to 170.3 from May while the national index sits at 165.9. Manufacturing and construction lead sector gains. distributive trade shows weakness nationally though Nebraska retail expands, especially outside metro areas in Hartington Norfolk Columbus ONeill and West Point with Sidney Kimball Chappell area up 23.5 percent. Local gains outpace statewide first half 1973, with ag price effects driving dollar volume.
