State VFW Commander To Be Honored Sunday

Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary from across Nebraska will gather in Sidney on Sept 20 for the fall District II meeting and a reception honoring Marion Whitaker of Sidney as the 1970-71 Nebraska VFW Commander. The day includes district meetings at the courthouse, a noon luncheon at the Silver Dollar, and a 2 to 4 p.m. reception at the Legion Club, co-sponsored by Post 610 and Ladies Auxiliary.

Dalton youth Alex Brown is selected with three other Wye-Braska Area Boy Scouts to join the U S contingent for the world jamboree in Japan. The 9 day event near Mt Fuji will include 20,000 scouts from 132 nations plus 11 days of cultural tours in Nikko Kyoto Nara and more. Applicants must be 14 18 and hold First Class or Explorer rank.

Sidney Youth Pleads Nolo Contendere to Assault Charge

Sidney teenager Sidney Four Horn, 17, pleaded nolo contendere to assault with intent to inflict great bodily harm. He was sentenced to not less than one year nor more than two years in the Nebraska State Penal Complex at Lincoln following a downtown Sidney fight that hospitalised several Vo-Tech students after a tire iron attack. District Court Judge John Kuns presided.

Charges Filed Against Williams and Carter in Sidney Fraud Case

Cheyenne County Attorney Donald J. Tedesco filed charges shortly after noon today against Thomas Williams and David E Carter. The complaint alleges both men attempted to defraud the J J Newberry Co in Sidney of about 85 90 dollars in money and merchandise. They were arrested in Kimball by Nebraska State Patrol Trooper Richard Larson.

Panhandle forecast mixed clouds with light drizzle

Weather outlook for the Panhandle shows mostly cloudy skies with occasional light drizzle in the southern part and partly cloudy conditions in the north this afternoon through Thursday morning. Highs near 60 today, lows around 40, and Thursday highs near 70 with minimal chances of measurable precipitation. Friday remains fair and warm in the 80s, followed by partly cloudy and cooler conditions Saturday and Sunday in the 70s, with a small shower chance Saturday.

The No 1 Benoit discovery well eight miles west of Dalton by Sunaanee Oil and Southwest Gas Producing recovers 800 feet gas, 178 feet oil, 348 feet oil and gas cut mud, and 30 feet mud cut water from the D sand at 4865 to 4873 feet. Ultimate production potential depends on pumping results. No immediate drilling plans disclosed. operators seek surrounding leases, with two nearby sites staked in Cheyenne County namely State and Robertson bores by Enbrook Oil and Harper Oil.

Sales Seminar Night Session Is Called Off

The Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce sponsored seminar drew good crowds. Charles Chace of the Nebraska Petroleum Council and M J Graham of the Retail Merchants Assn directed it. The evening session was canceled as directors were recalled to Lincoln after the afternoon.

Grid Contest Entries Due Friday Night

Entry deadline for The Sidney Telegraph football contest is five p.m. Friday. Mail or deliver to Box 219, Sidney, Nebraska. The tie breaker is Nebraska versus Southern California, with Carr's Rating Service predicting USC by ten points. Craftsman Award To Sidney Photographer Alvin Duis

Sidney photographer Alvin Duis has been awarded the Photographic Craftsman degree by the Professional Photographers of America, joining his previous Master of Photography earned in 1949. He holds 125 merits, placing him among the top twenty active portrait photographers, and is a member of AS of Photographers and Camera Craftsmen of America. Duis taught science and band at Kimball in the 1930s and began his photography career there. the studio moved to Sidney in 1943.

Dusty Rhodes Visits Sidney on Nebraska tour

Dusty Rhodes former Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission director and current Santa Fe based petroleum consultant visited Sidney last night and this morning en route to eastern Nebraska and Ohio. He said he planned to continue on his travel to the Midwest.

UF Drive Set Back One Week

The Sidney United Fund campaign for 1971 is delayed a week with advance gifts now set to begin Sept. 28 instead of Sept. 21. Nine organizations share a total budget of 12,700 dollars, including 640 for expenses, up from last year. A new member, the Association for Retarded Children, joins with a 1,500 dollar budget.

Teen Center Opens Friday Night Near J M McDonald Store

The new Teen Center will open Friday night after the football game offering music dancing pinball and refreshments. Teens are urged to use the center with a $1 annual membership. A Keen Teens meeting is set for 7 pm Wednesday at the center.
