Community CB radios aid Sidney police and public safety

Sidney Police Chief Roy Bauer says Citizen Band radio users provide many eyes for locating crime and hazards. Nationwide CB users aided arrests and rescues, though some false reports occur. local successes include locating a kidnapped girl, saving a heart attack victim, and aiding desegregation unrest efforts.

Mysterious truck and trailer found in Cheyenne County

Law officers recovered a 1969 Dodge semi tractor buried in a gravel pit near Huntsman and a Hastings Park trailer stolen near Cozad. The tractor, once owned by the Sterrett family, shows no ID and was sold by Wichita in 1975 for 500 dollars. The trailer carried about 700 bushels of hog feed and was reportedly stolen August 15 or 16. No arrests reported.

Telegraph grid contest opens this week

The Telegraph kicks off its 20th annual Football Contest this week with 20 college games and a tie-breaker. Prize money includes 25 dollars weekly, 35 dollars for perfect 20, and 50 dollars in the final week over a 10 week run.

Sid ney applies for additional loan for elderly housing

Word is expected this week on Sid ney's request to Farmers Home Administration for a new loan of 731200 to complete a 25500 square foot elderly housing complex in the southeast town. The loan follows prior 625000 loan approval and bids exceeded estimates by about 10 percent led by 654600 bid from Don Rice Construction of Bayard. An extra 90000 is planned for land acquisition landscaping closing costs interim financing and fees. County supervisor Gene Rainbolt said he expects information today or Tuesday.

Nebraska faces five presidential candidates on ballot

With the first Ford Carter debate near, Nebraskans prep for the November 2 election and a ballot listing five presidential contenders. Voters will also choose a U S senator three U S representatives and local officials in Cheyenne County Sidney and Potter. The registration deadline is 6 p m October 22.

Census near completion in Sidney as survey wraps up

Fred Klowan of Belle Fourche leads Sidney census for the Bureau of Census with 10 enumerators. The team aims to cover all homes by Thursday evening and use the next days for return calls, hoping to present a tentative population count to city officials before Friday. The 1970 figure of 6 403 is viewed as low and the project costs 3 525.

Potter Days showcase wide events and parades

About 1250 attendees enjoyed Potter Days with free barbecue, parade, games, aerobatics, dances, and displays. 650 pounds of beef and 100 pounds of beans fed the crowd after a 10 am parade featuring 14 local and 10 out of town floats and student bands. Rich Bastion performed stunts. Jim Brown rode a horse after the barbecue.
