Hastings Flood and Winds Hit Nebraska Town

Severe storms and flash floods swept south central Nebraska causing evacuations in northwest Hastings. About five inches of rain fell with reports up to seven inches nearby. National Guard activated to aid evacuations as power and phone lines failed and schools closed.

Potter Days Queen Crowned In Potter High Celebrations

Jennifer Juelfs, Potter High senior, was named queen of Potter Days in western Cheyenne County. Attendants Kelly Thies and Peggy Oberdorfer joined the celebration as Ray Wickhorst served as grand marshal for the parade honoring the late Ed Cole. The two day festival wrapped up Saturday with rides by M&S Drilling and bingo and a senior center band.

Thone urged to seek fifth term by GOP leader

Nebraska Republican Gladys Seaton urged Rep. Charles Thone to seek a fifth term in Congress. She spoke after an Omaha committee meeting as GOP contenders for governor and lieutenant governor debated. Others discussed include Vance Rogers Bob Phares and Gerald Koch with talk of Paul Douglas possibly pursuing the Senate seat.

Nebraska Roads District 5 meeting set in Sidney

An informational session is scheduled Tuesday at 7 30 p m at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel for residents in highway district 5 including Sioux Dawes Box Butte Sheridan Banner Scotts Bluff Kimball Morrill Cheyenne Garden and Devel counties The session aims to gather opinions questions and evaluations of Nebraska's highway program for 1978 1983 and will be chaired by a State High Commission member with Roads Department staff on hand to answer questions.

Pay Phone Rates in Limbo as Bell Awaits Nebraska Ruling

Northwestern Bell says it will wait for the Nebraska Public Service Commission decision on a 15.8 percent rate request before altering the current 10 cent pay phone charge. A Bell spokesman notes the company now operates at a loss with the 10 cent fee. A hearing on the proposal is not expected until early next year.
