Advance gifts drive for the United Fund of Sidney and Sioux Army Depot reports good mail response. Eleven two man teams begin personal solicitations Tuesday to follow up nonrespondents and aim to finish by week’s end to avoid conflicts with the main campaign next Monday.
Américan Legion and Auxiliary members from Cheyenne County posts will join the 4th District convention in Minatare. John Underdown of Sidney is district commander and presides over business. Johnson of Sidney is district vice president of the Auxiliary and will be featured on the program. Sessions start at nine with a memorial service, then business, lunch, and open sessions until five, followed by social events. No Legion election this year. Underdown continues as commander. Bill Cooper, commander of Sidney Post No. 17, will lead the Sidney delegation.
Mrs August F Jurgens age 59 died Sunday evening at Memorial Hospital after three weeks of illness. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2 pm at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev Henry Monnich. burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Survived by husband Augustus and two sisters Connie Thurow and Adelia Lambertus. Born December 12, 1902 at Gothenburg Nebraska.
A Mercury space capsule replica used by John Glenn and Scott Carpenter will be shown during Grand Island's State and National Corn Picking Contests on October 11 and 12. Arrangements with the National Air and Space Museum enable exhibition over the two days. The capsule towers 27 feet high with a 16 and a half foot diameter and weighs 16 tons.
The district range judging contest was held Saturday at the Sand Hills site north of Lake McConaughy. John Thurston of Potter led the field. Blue ribbon winners were Paul Hutchison, Dave Policy, Bruce Luehrs, and Roger Luehrs. Red ribbons went to Dave Hutchison, Bob Runge and Mike Policky. White ribbons were awarded to James Andersen, Brian Andersen, and Paul Hutchison. Fred Schmidt, Keith County extension agent, and local SCS technicians conducted the event, with Joe Policky and County Agent Ivan Liljegren accompanying the group.
The Sidney Livestock Pavilion, northeast of Sidney, is to be sold at sheriff’s sale on Sept. 24 to satisfy liens held by Charles N Deaver. After long litigation including a Nebraska Supreme Court appeal over prior mortgage rights, Deaver now owns most liens except a small third mortgage by J B Baker. The advertised sale items include the frame barn and facilities, a Fairbanks Morse scale, adding machines, file cabinet, office chairs and stools, a gas stove and grill, two refrigerators, and a heating unit with a 500 gallon tank. Local interests hope a bidder with pavilion experience will reopen the sale barn to boost town retail business.

The Potter Days celebration runs Friday and Saturday September 14 and 15 marking Potter’s 50th town incorporation. Exhibits in the Youth Center cover agriculture, 4-H, Campfire Girls, Scouts and flowers while a horse shoe contest and carnival rides entertain. A 7:30 p.m. Friday movie and an 8 p.m. football game pitting Potter High School against St. Anthony's of Sterling kick off the festivities. A Saturday parade features bands, floats, old cars and the Potter Days Queen Joan Schnell, followed by races, Go-Kart events, a BBQ, a 3:30 p.m. prize drawing, and a 9 p.m. dance at the Legion Hall.
John Julius Groshans 62 of Gurley died Sunday after four days in Memorial Hospital. Born May 30 1900 in Deshler Neb he moved to Gurley in 1918. Survived by wife Charlotte Rizor Groshans three daughters a son two brothers a sister and 13 grandchildren. Funeral Wednesday at St Pauls Lutheran Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Craig Mortuary in charge.
Sidney Community TV plans closed circuit telecast of Floyd Patterson Sonny Liston title bout to Sidney on Tuesday Sept 25 via AT T leased wire and microwave system as first in a potential series. Subscribers face a $1 add on to cover costs while Real Bargain officials call it a minimal price for a blow by blow ringside view not shown on regular networks.
Sharon Cape was crowned 1962 Dalton Fall Festival Queen after a Saturday talent pageant at Dalton High School. Attendants Scarlett Sparks and Marlene Sheets were named along with 15 contestants. event coordinated by Beta Sigma Phi Xi Omega chapter.
About 8 500 received the third Sabin polio dose Sunday in Sidney and Dalton with 1 400 at Dalton. Nebraska Safety Patrol rushed vaccine to Dalton after stock ran out. At Memorial Hospital in Sidney 7 100 doses were given. A Friday makeup day is planned at Memorial Hospital 3 to 6 pm to complete the three-dose series.
West Nebraska cattlemen are reminded that official brand inspectors are available locally before shipments to Denver. With Nebraska ending its Denver inspector, area inspectors must be used for Denver-bound cattle. The Great Western Sugar Co announces beet stations at Sidney and Sundwall open Monday October 8 under Ovid Cole supervision. Beets from Sidney go to Bayard and from Sundwall to Scottsbluff for processing. Crop looks similar to last year with water plentiful aiding stands. preharvest Aug 31 inspection hints beets slightly lighter but may improve. The fall harvest plan for potatoes beans beets and corn is expected to boost local labor temporarily.
Low official readings reached 24 degrees at Alliance with thermometers showing 22 elsewhere along the tablelands. The cold spell moved in from Canada, turning leaves gold and threatening safflower beans potatoes and sugar beets while most crops were believed to escape serious damage. The cold snap likely ended for the Panhandle as temperatures rose into the 60s by mid morning.
Ned Robinson, manager of the Sidney safflower mill operated by Pacific Vegetable Oil Corp and General Mills, says no safflower will reach the plant for at least ten days to two weeks due to late crop development and cold weather. He notes the crop looks better than six weeks ago but weather damage remains possible, while a field inspector found little evidence of damage in Gurley-Dalton area. The mill is modernizing for the 1962 crop, expects processing to begin between October 1 and 15, and has expanded storage to handle a likely larger acreage, though hail in the Dalton west area reduced expected yields.
