Potter School Addition Voted On In District 9

Voters in School District 9 Potter will decide on a 110000 bond to add ten classrooms and a music room to the Potter school. Enrollment has risen sharply and crowded conditions prompt plans for an addition designed by Hinde and Laurinat. A public meeting will be announced. if approved construction would begin this fall.

Adjustments Of Rail Wheat Rates Urged By Board

The State Railway Commission urged immediate rail rate reductions for hauling wheat before the Western Trunk Line Committee in Chicago. The Nebraska Railway Commission backed blanket rolling-rate cuts to curb truck competition and protect railside industries.

Scottsbluff Plans Two Bond Packages for Schools

Scottsbluff residents will vote in November on two bond packages. The school board approved separate proposals for grade schools and high schools, totaling 600000 and 1900000 dollars respectively, with voters able to approve either package.

Unhurt Woman In Brownson Area Car Crash

An accident ten miles west of Sidney near Brownson Tuesday at 7 PM involved vehicles driven by W E Harrs of Harrisburg and John Klinepier of Hopkins Minnesota. The Hopkins car tried to pass as the Harms car began a left turn. Damage was $50 to the Klinepier car and $150 to the Harms car. Mrs John Klinepier was taken to Memorial Hospital and listed in poor condition.

PVO Plant Expands for Large Safflower Storage and Handling

The Pacific Vegetable Oil plant in Sidney known as the safflower plant is adding a 70 by 160 foot storage building with 20 foot eaves to hold about 5000 tons or 200000 bushels. A dump bin auger system moves seed in and out, a surge tank stores a full shift, and a hot spot detector monitors seed condition while remote control handles movement. Completion targets include first local seed shipments by Monday and ongoing processing of seed from Montana with full capacity through winter and beyond.

237 Million Bushels Of 58 Wheat Stored

The Agriculture Department reported Tuesday that farmers held 237,545,000 bushels of 1958 crop wheat under price supports through Aug 25, approaching the 256 million bushels of 1957 crop stored for the season. The gain in movement stems from the 1958 crop being about 50 percent of 1957, Kansas led with 93,53,000 bushels. Nebraska 13,029,000. Colorado 6,356,000.

American Doughnut Promotes Wheat Exports At European Fairs

American wheat growers led by Robert Rauner and Lloyd Koniny stage exhibits in Vienna and Munich from September to October sponsored by Nebraska Kansas and Colorado Wheat Commissions with USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. London fairgoers sample the doughnut using US flour as two machines produce 1000 doughnuts per hour amid strong demand. A color recipe folder for homemade doughnuts, created by Amber Fields, accompanies the displays and a replica exhibit was shown at the 1958 Nebraska State Fair.

Postmaster Har old Lessig announced Gurley will receive an afternoon mail messenger from Bridgeport, restoring two daily deliveries. Mail previously came only by Burlington train after a bus line strike, with afternoon pickup or next morning rural route delivery restored.

Sol Willis, Sidney police chief, was elected president of the Nebraska section of the FBI National Academy Graduates Association at a meeting in Omaha. Paul Vere, Lincoln state probation officer, was chosen vice president, and Gene Masters of Lincoln Police Department became secretary treasurer.

New Science Teacher Hired Without Interview Amid Navy Absence

Sidney board minutes show a routine meeting approving a new junior high science teacher, Vaden T Miller, despite Superintendent Weymouth suspending the rule to interview him while Miller serves in the Navy off Barbers Point Hawaii. Miller would arrive October 1 if he accepts. The board also discussed speech therapy results and a bus garage bid from Loch Electric Co, plus the transition to mandatory activity fees for all students with booster tickets and class dues.

Weather Update for Sidney Nebraska Turns Humid

Humidity high and a recent half inch shower improve moisture in the Sidney area. The airport read 48 degrees, with 76 as the afternoon temperature and 59 percent humidity. Gusts up to 23 mph earlier gave way to milder winds as skies stay partly cloudy and thunderstorms remain possible. Highs in the low 80s and lows in the 50s are forecast for the next five days with a quarter to a half inch of rain possible from thundershowers.

Kimball Man Killed In Colorado Wreck

Larry Duane Magill 25, of Kimball and former Atwood resident, died after his car left Highway 14 two miles east of Stoneham. The vehicle crashed into a large boulder in a borrow pit, Magill pinned beneath the car and died about an hour later.
