A late July survey found .74 pheasants per mile, 64 adult cocks per 100 hens ratio down from 148, with 149 young per adult. Hunting years 1943 1944 tied to low populations and late 1945 hatching

The commission notes 1943 and 1944 were years of heavy hunting with reduced bird populations after poor nesting. A cold June hindered hatching across much of the state, especially central and northern regions. Late 1945 hatches should raise fall numbers. counties with more young birds in 1945 also show overall population gains, underscoring the impact of birds-of-the-year on hunting.
