Sidney youngsters await a free Hallowe'en party at the junior high gym from 7:30 for about three hours. The city and Lions club sponsor the event with prizes, games, boxing and wrestling, moving pictures, and free food. About 50 awards will be given, with prizes funded by Sidney merchants and organized by a Lions committee.
Albert L. Troelstrup, 22, a ranch resident from western Nebraska, began a canoe trip July 1 on Milk River in Canada toward the Gulf of Mexico. He reached the Missouri River near Fort Peck Dam and has been making good time, carrying only a canoe a sleeping bag and a few camping utensils.
Mrs William Nelck advertises a farm sale next Wednesday November 4 at the Nelck farm six miles east of Gurley or 12 miles north of the Krueger lake corner. She offers all livestock machinery and household goods as she prepares to leave. A B Rapp is the auctioneer and Mayer and Arp are clerks.
State Democratic leaders speculate on the donor who gave Terry Carpenter 600 to aid campaign expenses. Carpenter reported 803 in contributions this week, including the 600 gift from an unnamed donor.
Officials of the North Pirate Valley Poultry Marketing association estimate eight carloads about 250000 turkeys will leave the valley for eastern markets in the first shipments around November 15. Reading starts November 10 at Wheatland with loading at Lusk Torrington Kimball Sidney Gering and Bridgeport likely November 11 12 and 13. About 25 carloads expected to be sent to eastern cities this season amid a rise in production.
Catherine Doran a pioneer Sidney resident marked her 90th birthday quietly at home on Tuesday. Immediate family gathered as she has been ill for months, delaying a larger reception. Arriving in 1877 with Edmond Doran who died in 1911, she helped shape early community life and remains one of the area’s oldest residents. Despite illness she was alert and enjoyed the family gathering.
The annual Catholic bazaar dinner and dance will be held Wednesday and Thursday of next week. Altar society members progress preparations for what is expected to be among the most successful bazaars. Hundreds attend yearly, enjoying a delirious meal and entertainment units.
The American Legion auxiliary presents Sky High at the city auditorium on Monday and Tuesday evenings. An all home talent cast led by director Aliss Charlotte Malody features Leroy Price Frances Filbin Neil Atkins Muriel Riggs Helen Johnson Lester Peterson Catherine Jones Malvin Filbin Margaret Pfeil Melvin Pfeil Dan Hiett and Blaine Grabill. Curtain at 8 03 p m with tickets 35 cents adults 15 cents children. The production includes difficult choruses costumes and musical numbers in a modern humorous story full of laugh generating complications.
Local car dealers announce and preview 1937 models from Buick Pontiac Chevrolet Nash and Dodge Plymouth with early showings planned. Ford keeps details tight as dealers prepare for Detroit conference.
The Simpson Machine shop this week is developing a self power water lift that runs entirely by its own weight. Inventor G. H. Spain of 918 Illinois street Sidney has applied for a patent and plans to manufacture and sell the machine in Sidney and nearby areas. The device aims to simplify irrigation in Lodge Pole valley, with more details to follow after operation tests.
Nebraska newspapers carry last minute political appeals from both Republican and Democratic state committees. The Telegraph features ads urging voters to consider key issues. Conflicting claims dominate, yet provide engaging reading for politically minded citizens ahead of next Tuesday’s election.
The district winners announced this week exclude Cheyenne county entries. Orville Roe of Mitchell and James Tipton of Oshkosh tied for first among boys, while Barbara Huff of Scottsbluff led girls with Betty Roach of Scottsbluff finishing second. Miss Roach is among five state girls finalists in Omaha. No western Nebraska boys placed.
The Zike and Dean Troupes presented their rodeo revue on the Imperial theatre stage in Alliance and drew a good audience. Alliance utilized a heavier fast backfield to overwhelm Sidney, 21 to 0. English and Woods led the Alliance attack while Darnell and Bales provided Sidney’s lone spark with punt returns and heavy gains early and late in the game.
The Womans club plans a world tour style program for yearly meetings. The initial session starts next Tuesday at the library basement with Dr A L Miller recounting travels in the orient. Mrs J W Johnson leads the Sidney to San Francisco segment aboard the streamliner before boarding the China Clipper to Manila.
The American Legion boxing committee lists headliners with Joe Duran missing. Scotts bluff lightweight awaits the Armistice day card. Duran has not posted forfeit money, leaving him out. Dixie Taylor targets Young Joe Louis within seven rounds, while Louis vows to extend his 59 straight wins. John Costello plans early advertising in western Nebraska and northeastern Colorado towns.
Mrs Ella Thorpe, longtime Greenlees' dry goods manager, left Sidney last night for Worland Wyoming where she accepted a department store post. She came from Cheyenne and formed a wide circle of friends here. She thanked local well-wishers for their kindness and said she would never forget the friendships made.
Osborn Garage is to be presented with an engraved plaque for selling more Dodge and Plymouth cars during July August and September than any other Cheyenne district dealer. The district covers most of the west half of the state and includes larger towns than Sidney. Osborn reports strong new car volume all year and expects continued success with the 1937 models.
The WPA and Cheyenne county board of commissioners report 75.5 miles of farm to market highway completed with 46.5 gravel, 23 heavy grading, 6 light grading. Two bridges total 52 feet. 32 culverts 868 feet. City streets and alleys under construction total 1016 blocks, 334 asphalt and seven graded. Across the state WPA workers have completed 2475 miles.
The 1936 pheasant season ends at 6 p m Sunday November 1 making any pheasant shooting illegal until next Open Season. Duck hunters may lose interest as migratory bird season opens Sunday at 7 a m. North Platte river blinds prepared and warm weather brings ducks back to the sandhills but wardens will strictly enforce bag limits.
Dr. P. H. Bartholomew, state health director, reports Nebraska saw higher births in the first half of 1936 than in the same period in 1935. Totals: 11,441 births vs 11,283. males 5,876 vs 5,164. females 5,565 vs 5,519. Races show white 11,210, Negro 10, Japanese and Chinese 5, Indian 51, Mexican and mixed 70. Twins rose from 11 to 148 pairs, triplets fell from two to one.
A district convention of B and P W clubs will be held in Sidney at the country club house on Sunday November 8. Delegates from Chadron Scottsbluff and Alliance will join Sidney members for a one day meeting. Miss Valeska Neubauer district publicity chairman expects an official program soon. North Platte has requested transfer to the Kearney district.
Cheyenne county polls next Tuesday will decide two proposed amendments to the Nebraska constitution. One seeks abolition of the land commissioner of public lands and buildings. The other would repeal sections fixing double liability of stockholders in state banks. Banks oppose the change but the land office issue divides opinion with critics fearing patronage and unclear transfer.
Twenty four men from all parts of Nebraska began drafting the state's 1937 agricultural conservation program at Lincoln on Wednesday. They will assemble farmer recommendations from 12 district meetings into a composite plan to be presented at a regional meeting, likely in Chicago, in the coming weeks. Fred Wallace of Gibbon chairs the state agricultural conservation committee. Western Nebraska delegates include Otis Smith of Kimball, S Burnham of Bridgeport, and Jay Hepperly of Ogallala.
The Interstate Commerce Commission announced 12 western railroads may extend emergency drouth freight rates for livestock shipments. It also designated four Nebraska counties Grant Kimball Nemaha Scotts Bluff and one Wyoming county as additional drouth rate areas for shipments to feeding regions.
L. W. Cole of Sidney reported to Sheriff Ramsey that 24 sacks of 100 pounds each were taken from his truck while en route west from Scottsbluff. He suspects the theft occurred after the truck was parked at Scottsbluff and sacks were discarded along the highway, with several scattered piles found along the ditch.
Lieut. Gerald L Roberson of the 76th field artillery will lead a recruiting party in Sidney on Monday November 2 to enlist young men of good character for the United States Army. Recruits will be stationed at Fort Warren with education advancement opportunities. Enlistments are for three years and include food clothing dental and medical treatment at no cost.
Western Nebraska Lutherans met at Salem church near Gurley from Tuesday to Thursday. Pastors led discussions while professors demonstrated lessons and catechetical work for teachers and advanced pupils, with Rev. W Koenig and Rev H F Krohn preaching.
Omaha Protestant leaders announce a statewide preaching mission series with one day and eight day campaigns. Teams led by Rev. Frank G. Smith, Rev. Archibald Stewart, Rev. E. M. Kendall, and Rev. Paul Turner will tour Sidney and other towns, holding group discussions on evangelism and union evening services. No Sidney church has issued an official notice yet.
On the first day of the pheasant open season only 25 arrests were recorded. Frank B. OConnell, chief conservation officer, said the figure was a good record. Fines ranged from 10 to 15 dollars for hunting without a permit, shooting in closed territory, and killing more than the allowed hens. The bag limit is four birds, with at most one hen.
Remodeling of the Coliseum includes a new roller skating rink and dance hall in the old Tobin opera house building. Completion is planned well before the opening Saturday night, with dancing beginning November 7. The interior is fully redone and the floor resurfaced for an inviting appearance.
An entertainment feature is reserved for Fox Theatre patrons next Wednesday and Thursday. Captain Bob Ingleston, a former war photographer for the Signal Corps in the AEF, will present and explain authentic government war pictures on stage.
The annual Hallowe en ball will be staged Saturday night at the city auditorium. Sponsored by St Martha s guild of the Episcopal church the event opens the winter dancing season and is typically well attended. Hank Barker and his orchestra provide the music. Tickets cost 1.00 dollars.
Gifford Pinchot, former Pennsylvania governor, explains he skipped Nebraska to avoid offending Senator Norris's re election bid. Lincoln confirms the claim after Norris had alleged Pinchot was recruited to speak for Gov Landon but chose to decline. Pinchot says Nebraskans will rise above partisanship and re elect Norris.
