Two public sales are listed with details in this issue. Joe Pokorny of Saunders County offers stock, implements, and household goods for sale on November 2. Cr L Lucy, a rancher fourteen miles southwest of Staney, is scheduled for November 6 with a large sale of good items.
Mrs Lyman and son Clark from Shanghai, China stayed Tuesday through Thursday with Mrs J J McIntosh. The visitor, who lived here as a young woman, is well connected with past residents and her travels in China and Japan provide a wealth of information. Her husband runs a Shanghai business and they enjoy modern American city comforts.
This week Joseph Haller bought and C P Grant the lot west of the Ford Garage. Haller intends to build a fire proof garage on the entire 66 by 132 feet, to be used by Haller and Treinen along with their current quarters due to increasing trade.
The Birth of a Nation played four times at Tobin Opera House in Sidney, twice each Sunday and Monday, drawing full houses with strong praise for its Civil War and Reconstruction era depictions. Manager Kruse reported high attendance and audience satisfaction, noting the film’s moving scenes and historical lessons aimed at peace.
The first period of school work is over and attendance is high. A Wednesday afternoon football game between the high school team and the high school second ended with a 7 to 6 victory for the first team. Frank Hahler and Alford Bentley starred for the scrubs. Liebendorfer and Glen Andrews led the defense.
A musical entertainment directed by Mr. Lewis is planned for the near future, likely the high school assembly on November 24. Proceeds will cover a projected $80 deficit in the school lecture course. Grade teachers without Palmar Method certificates have begun a penmanship correspondence course, started last year’s second semester, noted for improved writing and teaching. The program will continue until all teachers hold certificates.
The Hobannans delighted audiences with their stage presence and charm in the opening high school lecture entertainment course. The performance drew enthusiastic praise for both on and off stage personalities, with no dry moments. The next act will be the Sheehan Concert Company on November 13.
Viggo Nelson is the contact for a painting assignment advertised in the area. The notice invites interested painters to discuss the project terms and schedule a submittal or meeting with Nelson.
Joseph Pokorny and his young son Arnold were separated during a cattle drive as a blizzard hit. The boy was found dead after a long search by more than a hundred neighbors, with his dog guarding the body. The family mourns as the community offers support and sympathy.
A list of polling sites for Cheyenne County in 1916 including Bronson School House, Colton School House, Davison School House, Eagle School House, Gurley Wergert's Hall, Lodge Pole Town Hall, Potter School House, and multiple Sidney locations. Polls open eight in the morning to eight in the evening. Also notes Mrs C E Dewey and baby returning to Oshkosh after a visit with local families.
Sunday dinner guests at the F. Mann home included Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mann, Kenneth Agnew, and B. A. Jones and family. The Essig Store advertises a closing out sale offering bargains in furniture and related items.
A Bushnell Union Pacific wreck Monday night left two firemen dead and two others badly hurt with several more hurt. A double header freight and a westbound passenger train collided after a freight engine was detached for water. Fourteen coal cars derailed and spilled. Traffic halted about eighteen hours as wreckers worked and passengers were moved to Jilesburg.
R D Nevine visited York on Tuesday and spent a day handling farm business. Crowds gathered over Sunday and Monday from surrounding towns, making it hard to count visitors. Mr and Mrs Alfred Nelson of LaPorte Indiana stayed with Mrs R D Devine and family during their bridal tour from Sunday through Wednesday night.
Mr and Mrs Joseph Oberfelder and daughter Leona depart for Wroxelsior Springs to aid the mother’s health. The husband will conduct business in Omaha during the trip.
W. H. Weeden of Osceola Nebraska has joined his son in the furniture and undertaking business located in the Odd Fellows building. The elder Weeden has rented the Muriess house and will move his family to town soon.
G R Miller traveled from Edison Nebraska on Sunday to lead the funeral services for Chas R Draper uncle of Mrs A McCann of this city. His daughter Miss Merle Draper also visited in Sidney this summer.
Reverend Mr and Mrs Donaldson return from a month long visit to Ohio and Pennsylvania visiting both sets of parents. Reverend Donaldson was ordained into the Lutheran church ministry of the east Ohio Synod at Letonia Ohio. They find the parish busy with good works and the church and annex improved in their absence.
Mr and Mrs Frank Bowlin of Harlin Texas arrived Sunday evening and visited until Tuesday evening with Mr and Mrs Leroy Martin. The two ladies are sisters. Bowlin, a heavy landowner in Texas, praised the city despite stormy weather keeping them from a county drive.

Fred W. Vath a leading Sidney citizen dies October 17 1916 in Rochester Minnesota after a long illness. He served on the city council led local fire department and county fair association and helped build the family home. Survived by wife Mary Sarah and sons Ralph Paul and Fred with several siblings and many friends attending his funeral.
Moisture arrived generously without severe cold as building operations paused briefly. Cement work progressed while construction lines pushed to the limit amid housing demand, with people eager to move into quarters before a hard winter.
