Former state official testifies Gov Exon held a July 14 1971 staff meeting in Ashland about the Omaha office lease. He and others raised objections to cost and non cancellability. Subcommittee votes to forward findings to the attorney general and notes the land title dispute underlying the lease.
State Sen. Robert L. Clark of Sidney, chair of the subcommittee, says the hearings on a state lease in Omaha revealed a nonstandard deal between Gov. Exon administration and contractor JADO Investment. He cautions against assuming all public business follows this model, noting secrecy and political tension as Republicans probe DemocraticExon ally Michael Jackson. The subcommittee seeks its report while questions remain about process and legality. The lease funds would come from the U.S. Department of Labor and be allocated by the Nebraska Legislature.
The Associated Press reports a weather change for Nebraska with cool and cloudy conditions and a chance of light rain or drizzle south and west. Overnight lows are expected at 46 to 52 degrees, with Thursday remaining cool and sporadic rain. Afternoon highs 56 to 62. Omaha and Beatrice tied at 76 degrees, Sidney at 29 as the day began.
Sidney Planning Commission, in a basement Cheyenne County Court House room, voted 7-1 to continue the hearing on the east Sidney 76 acre shopping center site. John Egging urged development for commercial interests and urged the council to encourage a developer to locate there, while denying any conflict of interest among members.
Cheyenne County residents have two days left to register to vote in the November 5 general election. Registration closes at 6 p.m. Friday at the county clerk’s office in the Cheyenne County Courthouse. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, with noon hours both days. Voters 18 and older who have not registered or who changed address or name must register.
Nebraska attorney general candidate Paul Douglas, 46, emphasizes his 18 years as Lancaster County attorney as the core qualification. In Sidney during a campaign swing, he outlined plans to aid outstate counties, back consumer protection and anti trust laws, and create a trial division in the AG office. Morrison, a former governor, is his opponent. incumbent Meyer is not seeking re election.
The Sidney United Fund moved to 97 percent of its 1974 goal of 13 000 dollars as regular contributors who have yet to respond loom large in reaching the target. The drive's momentum suggests the sum will be reached despite outstanding pledges.
The Sidney Telegraph reports a back shop gremlin fan of Nebraska interfered with the Big Eight schedule by listing Nebraska versus Oklahoma in the tie-breaker. Judges will assume Oklahoma State for scoring. United Fund drive updates show late contributions from Union Pacific and neighborhood chairmen. secretary Barb Custer says funds move faster this year and $10,000 is placed in CDs. Donations are welcome to finish the drive and plan 1975 expansion.
