Potter Sage harvests first sunflower crop in Cheyenne County

Vern Nelson of Potter reports the first Cheyenne County sunflower crop harvested after severe hail and miller damage. He planted 140 acres north of Potter with Cargill seed, estimates 600 to 1 000 pounds per acre, and notes heads from 2 to 10 12 inches. Nelson may ship seed to Minneapolis and helped design his harvest combine.

Nebraska to use new formula for school aid funds

The Nebraska Department of Justice outlines a 55 million state aid plan altering distribution among 1,147 districts. Urban districts may gain while those with large land holdings and sparse populations may receive less under the new equalization based formula. State hopes first two payments mail by November 20.

Sidney bond proposal outlines $2.885 million school plan

Architect John Smutz of Wilson & Co says the plan is bare bones with no extras. The bond vote in Sidney would finance construction costs near 35 dollars per square foot based on Hensel Phelps estimates, with materials and construction type to be chosen to maximize economy. If approved, bids would be sought in 1978 and may use metal or brick, balancing acoustics and class needs.

Feedlot request near Dalton denied by planning commission

Cheyenne County Planning Commission voted to recommend denial of Lazy J Ranch of Dalton for a feedlot one third miles north of town along US 385. Tom Brower spoke for 80 residents opposing odor flies and health concerns. The County Board will hold a hearing on the proposal. The commission also granted Basin Electric a permit for a 345 kv transmission line tying Sidney substation to a new west substation three miles away within three years.
