Morrison Fleming Panel to Discuss Bank Role in Rural Future

Gov Frank Morrison joins a three man panel on Thursday to address revitalizing Nebraska’s rural economy. The Ft Sidney meeting, hosted by the Western Nebraska Conference of Bank Auditors and Comptrollers, will draw about 100 bankers and guests from the Panhandle. Other panelists are Sen William Brandt and Sen George Fleming.

Sumner Improves After Train Strike Injury

Dan Sumner, a Sidney High School senior, was critically injured last week when struck by a Union Pacific train. He is reported to be improving rapidly at Memorial Hospital, after suffering a skull fracture and other injuries.

The Wheatbelt Public Power District schedules its annual meeting for Saturday Oct 20 at the Oshkosh City Auditorium. Registration at 10 39 am precedes youth tour reports by Wayne McRoberts, Dalton, and Vaiercrew Chappell. A noon luncheon follows with moving pictures for children, a members meeting, entertainment, and door prize awards. Agricultural Study Outlined At Tuesday Meeting

The Rural Area Development Crops committee will host a 7:30 p.m. meeting at the Wheatbelt Public Power District building to outline an extensive regional agricultural research project. Wife and Son Survivors Of Accident Victim Ralph B Johnson

Ralph B Johnson age 63 of Racine Wisconsin was killed in a car crash three miles east of Sidney Friday. He is survived by his wife Evangeline of Racine and one son. Gering and Son Funeral Home handled local arrangements and the body was shipped to Racine for funeral services.

Island at Sioux Army Depot Road Intersection

A holding island will be built six miles west of Sidney on Highway 30 where it meets the Sioux Army Depot road. Construction could start late this week, weather permitting, with completion in under two weeks. The island will extend nine to 14 feet on each side to ease turns and reduce hazards. Nebraska Highway Department resident engineer Bob Daul noted funding recently became available after years of consideration.

Historical Society Special Meeting Called in Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County Historical Society members are urged to attend a special meeting on Tuesday October 16 at 7 30 p m in the office of Jack Knicely 1023 Tenth Ave The meeting aims to amend by laws to provide a method for amending the Articles of Incorporation and to rescind Amendments to Articles 5 and 8 of the By laws The Board of Directors calls this meeting to transact this important business.

Grass Fire Response Near Greenwood Cemetery

The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department responded to a grass fire by the Union Pacific right-of-way near Greenwood Cemetery at 2 01 pm Friday. The blaze was extinguished quickly and the unit returned to quarters at 2 29 pm.

North Siders push for Union Pacific walkway solution

North Side residents form a campaign to obtain an elevated pedestrian crossing over the Union Pacific tracks to serve junior and senior high students. WNOA Meeting Set Here in February

A planning session for the Western Nebraska Organized Agriculture meeting will be held at Sidney on Feb. 5 at 1 30 p.m. in the 4 H Building. Cheyenne County Agent Ivan Liljegren notes attendees include Chet Walters supervisor Mrs Earl Gell Ray Cruise Joe Policky chairman and county agents Liljegren and Burton. The February WNOA meeting will serve the entire southern Panhandle.

C of C Urges Courthouse Saturday Hours in Sidney

The Sidney Chamber of Commerce board voted to draft a resolution asking that courthouse offices be open on Saturday mornings. The proposal, unanimous, will be prepared for county commissioners. The group will not specify Saturday closing times nor include the store opening issue. A new road project on Route 19 aims to end frost load limits this spring.

Large Attendance Saturday Honor 4-H Members, Leaders At Annual Achievement Event

At the 1962 4-H Achievement Banquet in the National Guard Armory a capacity crowd celebrated 4-H members and leaders. Terry Spiker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Spiker, was named outstanding member for service. He led as Junior Leaders president, helped with the Junior Fair Board, and aided fundraiser drives for the Washington, D. C. trip. County Agent Ivan Liljegren praised his late start and strong progress. A potluck supper and awards program highlighted the evening, with slides from the Citizenship trip shown and explained by Diana Hinrichs and Jerry Swanson. Awards were presented by Ivan Liljegren and Lyle Burton, with Burton in Uncle Sam attire. Various Achievement, Citizenship, Leadership, and Agriculture honors were given to Don Ray Cruise, Evelyn Hardesty, Peggy Allington, David Policky, Don Ray Cruise, Evelyn Hardesty, David Hutchi son, Paul McMillen, Kathy McNurlin, Karen Meier, Jeanne Woten, Marlaine Walker, and others.
