Assessments Fill Council Room Monday in Sidney

City council in Sidney held a board of equalization session Monday to address district assessments 83 87 and 83. The gathering discussed a recent Supreme Court notification ruling and Nebraska law requiring property-owner notices for assessment methods. No changes were made. the matter was tabled for further explanation by City Engineer E Y Grupe. The meeting also covered sidewalk bids for the band shell area and requests for written bids on small concrete repairs. Barricading 10th Street for a Nebraska Wheat Show display was approved for Oct 23.

Parole violation lands 90 days for James A. Kautz

James Allan Kautz received a 90 day sentence in Cheyenne County District Court for parole violation after failing to pay a $100 fine from a December 1956 plea. He was ordered to pay the fine and the costs of the Tuesday prosecution.

Cheyenne Runaways Reunited With Parents After Detention

Three Cheyenne boys ages 16 15 and another youth were picked up by the Safety Patrol Sunday night and turned over to their parents. The youths Bell Harkess Chris Morris and John Jensen were found hitchhiking on Highway 30 and lodged in the Sidney city jail until their father arrived to collect them. State Trooper Del Shipley assisted in the case.

GOP Caravan in Sidney Highlights Labor Stance and Tax Cuts

Rep. A L Miller of Kimball told Sidney crowds that Eisenhower era policy boosted GOP hopes and labor officials want subservience. Gov. Anderson touted two Nebraska tax cuts and roads growth while Sen. Hruska blamed Democratic Congress for deficits and inflation. The stop drew larger crowds than two years ago.

Oil Progress Week Banquet Tickets Remain Available

Oil Week students tour Sidney oil industry on field trip

About 75 Sidney high and St. Pat’s senior boys joined an Oil Progress Week program as “oil men for a day.” They toured engineering geology marketing transportation and production groups, heard talks from L A Lindstrom of The Ohio Oil Co and prepared rapid reports at a Fort Sidney hotel lunch program.

Day and Wagner Fined for Speeding in Cheyenne County

Doris May Day age 25 of Cincinnati Ohio and Robert M Wagner Jr of Amboy Michigan were listed in Cheyenne County Court records after safety patrols pulled them for speeding. Each paid a $10 fine on separate speeding charges.

Sterling Man Receives 4 to 8 Years For Rape Case

Alfred L. Matthews of Sterling was sentenced to four to eight years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to raping a 15 year old Sidney girl on Oct 7 in Cheyenne County District Court. He must pay prosecution costs. Co-defendants Richard Downey and Gerald Wickman face pending charges. The girl said the trio abducted her and assaulted her in a rural area.

36 Year Old Pleads Not Guilty to Rape Charge

William Wilcoxson 36, once of Texas now living in Sidney, pleaded not guilty in Cheyenne County District Court to rape. Court appointed Joel Babcock as counsel. Wilcoxson allegedly picked up a 19 year old Sidney woman September 30 and assaulted her in the country. Bond $2000. Bound over for November jury term.
