Western Nebraska is estimated to produce 14.9 bushels per acre in corn, 2.5 above the state average, with 1938 crops maturing after a late growing season. Spring wheat yields reach 10.4 bushels, up from 3.9 in 1937, while oats and barley advance and sorghums remain strong in the panhandle area.
The Sidney country club championship final became a John Deere affair with three of four finalists employed by John Deere Plow Company. Lee Ellsworth defeated Jess Tompkins to claim the 1938 title after a spirited match, with Frank Gallagher winning the first flight from Mal Filbin. Ellsworth and Gallagher are former club champions.
National Fire Prevention Week observed in Sidney with key safety tips for residents. Do not drop lighted matches or allow used oil and paint rags to accumulate. Avoid cheap wiring, explosive cleaners, and coin fuses. Call the fire department at once if a fire starts and teach family and employees about fire dangers. Mrs Frances Torkelson of Lincoln Nebraska chair of the board of supreme managers of Royal Neighbors of America will be guest of honor at a district meeting in Potter on Tuesday October 18 Camp No 7846 of Potter will host the event with a large attendance expected due to the supreme officer’s visit
Henry Blome, an officer for Platte Valley Livestock Commission, thwarted a safe burglary by two men. Woodrow Kasselder and Lawrence Kasselder were detained by Scottsbluff police for investigation. four others were released after questioning. Blome woke to noises, followed suspects, and alerted officers while pursuing them.
Mrs Bessie Sheets of Potter plans to attend a Royal Neighbors event featuring a school of instruction and class adoption. Mrs Torkelson will be principal speaker and long time Royal Neighbors leader, serving as supreme manager since 1927, with continuation noted on page 8.
The American Legion brings Nat Towles and his 14 piece orchestra to Sidney's city auditorium for a dance night. The act is billed as the largest and best the legion has booked here, with Towles known for successful engagements at major clubs and ballrooms.
Penney's ninth anniversary observed at the Sid ney store with a birthday party this week. The event promotes special values and customer savings expected to set a preced ent for value giving in the community. A novel advertisement in the paper invites the public to visit and view the on display values while prices are not shown in the ad.
Secretary Wallace and aides outline a four point program to ease farm price surpluses. It includes continuing crop control referenda, revived processing taxes, expanding domestic markets, and reorganizing the Agriculture Department. The plan aims to shield the administration from calls to fix farm prices at higher levels amid ample crops. The October crop report notes abundant supplies of staples with a 1938 corn crop forecast at 2,459,316,000 bushels and potential loan-rate implications.
County officers of the Agricultural Conservation Program will be named at a precinct delegates convention in Sidney district court room at ten this morning. Following Huntsman precinct’s last night meeting, leaders were chosen in seventeen precincts. results for several were not printed. The 1939 ACP launch will occur at six district meetings the third week in October with events in Lincoln Alliance Ogallala Grand Island Holdrege and Norfolk on October 20 to 22.
Two youths held for burglarizing a Dalton store faced hearings in district court on Monday. Melvin Martin, 17, received an 18 month to two year sentence in the men’s reformatory, while Warren Sorenson, 16, was paroled to his Hastings brother. Martin, Sorenson, and Mary Martin, 16, were found in a car with most of the loot. the girl was allowed to return home. They also admitted stealing a Gurley street car, which was recovered undamaged, bringing no extra charges.
Two candidates are effectively assured election in the state unicameral, L. B. Murphy of Scotts Bluff in the 42nd district and Marry E. Gantz of Alliance in the 41st. Palmer King, Morrill, won the nomination but holds a federal post and did not file a nomination certificate, keeping his name off the ballot. Gantz was renominated in the 41st, while Karl L. Spence died after the August primary leaving a vacancy that must be filled by petition. The only legal path to success would be a write-in candidacy.
Dr. A. L. Miller, Kimball legislator and State Medical Association president elect, spoke last week on medical insurance. He urged organized medicine to lead in providing hospital insurance for Nebraskans and insured groups, arguing medical care is an economic issue akin to food and shelter and that doctors should address these cost problems.
Bert Murphy president of a large Omaha car business and Robert Drum brewing executive visited Sidney on Wednesday. Murphy, who spent summers in Sidney and backed the Murphy Did-Its, recalled the town’s boom years when thousands were spent on a salaried baseball team. The pair were guests of Dr. R. E. Roche at Lions Club luncheon.
Washington reports high ranking PWA officials favor the Box Butte county pump irrigation grant and loan filed last month but funds are exhausted and Nebraska’s share is used. The project awaits a new PWA arrangement by the next Congress and will be prioritized once a new program is created.
Among attendees of the upcoming Fireman's convention at Fremont from Tuesday through Thursday are Judge Robert A. Barlow, William Riggs, Bob Clark, Sol and John Willis, George Porter, Willard Sutter, H. W. Ells, W. E. Gehrig, Al Bundy, Kermit Moore, and Tom Patrowsky.
Two men identified as William Sterling, 24, of Piqua Illinois, and Lorn E Swanson, 31, of Moorehead Minnesota, were arrested by city police for suspected car theft. Logan County Sheriff Ray Powell said they possibly stole a car at Sterling after beet field work layoffs near Iliff. Night Policeman Fred Runge and Special Officer Glen Moore detained them until Sterling authorities arrived. Burlington railroad workers tipped off Sterling officers. They said they helped push their car from a mudhole nearby.
Western Nebraska sugar refineries opened quietly Monday at 8 am in six towns: Scottsbluff Gering Minatare Bayard Mitchell and Lyman with plans to run at full capacity by week’s end grinding 12500 tons of beets daily. District manager D J Roach praised early tonnage and beet quality.
Coach Lewis Brown will send a patched Maroons lineup against Scottsbluff's Bearcats with a 2 30 kickoff. Injuries have weakened Sidney's team, including Rabe out for the season with a broken leg.
St Martha s Guild of the Episcopal church announced yesterday it had contracted Harry Collins and his band to play for the annual Halloween Ball at the city auditorium Monday October 31. Collins band played for a jubilee dance at the city auditorium October 5 and scored a big success with the dancers. He features nine pieces including a top vibraharp player from the Midwest.
The Business and Professional Women's club will host a noon luncheon at Campbell's to mark National Business Women's Week. No extra program is planned. President Roosevelt praised the week and urged women to prepare for service through training and social awareness in a letter to Miss Earlene White, head of the National Federation.
County Sheriff Schulz returned from Concordia Kansas with five men named James Charles Richard Harvey Don and Jack Sypherds to face burglary charges after farm home thefts in recent weeks. County Attorney Heaton sought governor Cochran’s extradition and expects to question the suspects today as Victims review recovered loot. Authorities link Harvey Sypherd to earlier cases though his involvement remains uncertain.
A. J. Jorgenson of Sidney, president of the Nebraska Bankers' Association, told delegates at Omaha that bankers shed showmanship in the Depression and now seek to be seen as plain business people and good citizens. He said former pride has faded and bankers are known as everyday men.
Nebraska reports a record feed grain crop, up 35.5 percent from last year and 70 percent above the 10 year average. Sorghum and barley reach historic values for livestock feed, rye and oats rise, late rains boost roughage, and Sandhills grass yields a top hay supply across many ranches.
L. G. Lowe a western Nebraska resident for thirty years left yesterday for San Bernardino California for an indefinite visit. He may permanently locate in California. From 1908 to 1930 he ran the lumber and grain business in Sidney. For eight years he operated the Cedar Creek Trout Hatchery near Broadwater. Recently the hatchery stock was sold to the state game and fish commission.
