Gov. J. J. Exon says a final decision on calling the Nebraska Legislature into a special session will come by Wednesday. He cites a financial crunch and potential tax relief as reasons and plans to meet officials Tuesday to shape the message.
Steam era spectacle drew buffs as Union Pacific Locomotive 8444 and American Freedom Train Locomotive 4449 halted in Sidney for about 45 minutes to water, near the site of the old native stone depot. They fuel along a Omaha to Cheyenne trip with 10 freight cars and a caboose, then proceed to Grand Island and North Platte. The UP expects this to be likely the last joint steam run in the region.
The Sidney City Council meets at 7 00 p m to hear Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co rate increase details for residential and commercial customers with an expected average rise of about 3 per month. Other agenda items include a Wheat Belt Public Power District wholesale rate review, critical area treatment funds for a park project, rezoning Arlo Jones Addition and Christian Church property, a Hillside Golf Course sandhill leveling request, higher waste collection rates, and an Oct 27 hearing for a package liquor license replacement.
Lincoln archs Dean Arter will meet Sidney Board of Education at its monthly session to review progress on proposed Junior-Senior High School complex and North and South elementary schools. The agenda includes personnel matters, extra duty committee report, student needs study results, and teacher assignments. The meeting is open to the public.
Nearly $2800 has been raised in the Sidney United Fund advanced gifts drive as of this morning. Mrs George Niekum said the 15 000 goal remains. Board members and workers will meet at 7 p m Tuesday to receive campaign materials. The residential drive starts October 27.
Western Nebraska Technical College officials say the Western Technical Community College Board of Governors will review a proposal to build mobile home pads on the Sidney campus for student use at the Alliance meeting. The plan faces opposition over cost and location as committee recommendations loom.
The Department of the Platte CAMP council schedules an all day meeting in Sidney to inspect Ft. Sidney ruins. A public tour starts at 9 30 a m from the Fort Sidney Hotel with Thomas Buecker giving background on the fort. Evening events include church visits and historic sites, with a 4 30 p m CAMP meeting and dinner. Sunday tours Mud Springs site.
Western Technical Community College Area officials review Carl Christ Jr's study showing remodeling 20 key buildings over two years would cost about 500000. Renovation includes windows roofing and siding with costs broken for Sioux Army Depot Administration and central administration as an AV center.
Western Nebraska Technical College hosts local high school students for afternoon classes in Fundamentals of Building Construction Basic Auto Mechanics and Aero Space Science. Thirty six students from Sidney Gurley Potter are in the program with named instructors and a Wind tunnel and airfoil studies under way. Dr Hawse notes the college serves students and adults across the area.
