A general banking house announces operations including buying and selling foreign and domestic drafts, issuing passage tickets to Europe, providing insurance, and handling collections and remittances with prompt attention.
A fire aboard a westbound freight near Sidney killed brakeman W White after he detached a burning car laden with kerosene and powder. The blast hurled flames, injured bystanders, and White died at the rail road hotel after a long struggle. The incident left the engine crew shaken as officials prepared a public memorial cave and organized aid.
A Sidney committee led by J J Mc Intosh Geo W Jenner J A Borie C D Essig W P Miles M H Tobin E Mc Lennon Chas Trognitz H McFadden and J Neubauer formed to push a proposed county division. They plan center third focus and will dispatch speakers to discuss the issue widely with residents. The group believes opposition will fade after careful weighing of the merits.
A new social group named the Oyster club replaces a defunct organization, meeting Saturdays in an Oriental room above Brennan's drug store. A large foreign shell decorates the entry, while the local officialdom notes the club's inaugural routine and aims.
The first meeting of the central association of Cheyenne county teachers was held in the high school room with Mrs Shelton presiding. In the forenoon and afternoon sessions teachers from across the district attended essays, singing, discussions, and an extensive query box. The Clarkson prize offers 100 dollars for the best five acre field of corn in Cheyenne County without irrigation. A committee including Geo E Thompson, NE Gasmann, and Charles Callahan will evaluate statements by planting time, ground type, and measurement by owner and witnesses. Sealed statements must be labeled Competitor for Clarkson prize and sent to Charles Callahan in Sidney Nebraska with a peck of corn.
Preparations are under way to establish a division of the Uniform Rank of Knights of Pythias in Sidney after receiving uniforms shipped from Cincinnati on the 2th of the month. Officers include AL DeCastro captain, H E Gapin recorder, J T Thoolecke treasurer. installation and reception planned. Ladies plan an entertainment to raise funds for a banner costing 85 to 1000 dollars.
A group of eight to ten prairie schooners from Missouri and Indiana traverses toward Washington territory seeking homesteads. Families of all ages travel together, hopeful for land within about a month, though no site chosen yet.
