United Fund Drive Faces Shortfall Risk In Sidney

United Fund receipts reached 5935.10 at mid campaign with four employer employee teams still unreported. Leaders fear failing to hit the 12000 goal, prompting rapid house to house drive prep and a year end administrative plan including a $25 monthly salaried secretary and $10,000 bond for treasurer.

Fox Theatre Plans Sixth Birthday Week

The Fox Theatre marks its sixth anniversary with a birthday week starting Sunday. Patrons registering birth dates receive a free birthday ticket and the celebration runs through a three day debut of The Sun Also Rises starring Ava Gardner Tyrone Power Mel Ferrer Errol Flynn and Eddie Albert. The schedule includes The Giant Claw and The Night the World Exploded on opening, with The Prince and the Showgirl and The Peacemakers shown Friday and Saturday.

Redistricting Units Directed In Eight Panhandle Counties

Nebraska State School Reorganization Committee ordered the dissolution of redistricting groups in eight of the eleven Panhandle counties including Cheyenne. Forty-three counties overall were directed to end work for failing to submit comprehensive plans. New elections were ordered in Morrill Devlld Kimball Sioux Box Butte Dawes and Garden Counties. Scotts Bluff submitted a plan while Banner consolidated Nebraskas counties into one district. Cheyenne sees ongoing consolidation but no county plan proposed yet.

SHS Homecoming Tonight Features Game And Dance

Sidney High School holds its annual homecoming tonight with the Sidney Gering football game followed by a dance in the school auditorium. Admission is 25 cents per person, refreshments served, and the Homecoming King will be crowned with the Queen announced at halftime. All alumni and students are urged to attend both events.

Tonyes Stikker Dies at 75 Near Dalton Nebraska

Tonyes Stikker 75 died today at his Morrill County farm home ten miles northeast of Dalton after six months of declining health. Funeral set for Monday at 2 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church Dalton with burial in Dalton Cemetery. He born June 24 1882 in Hanover Germany to Conrad and Johannes Middens Stikker came to Cheyenne County in 1889 and to Morrill County in 1903. survived by son Allen, daughter Rose Cortelyou of Fairfax CA, four grandchildren, sister Grace Zorn and brothers Henry and Ben Stikker, all at the farm.

Steam Locomotives Retired Once More

Sidney reports the last of the steam locomotives on the Union Pacific Railroad have been retired again until at least next summer. Coal-burners were placed in retirement after a busy summer along the North Platte Cheyenne district as diesel units arrive and heavy freight slows. The UP typically keeps steam on the Sidney run only during peak freight periods.

Union Pacific caps 1956 with Harriman Gold Medal

Union Pacific Railroad announced a perfect safety year for 1956 earning the E. H. Harriman Memorial Gold Medal for the best annual safety record among Class A railroads. The award, based on low casualty rates for passengers and employees, will be presented in New York on Oct 16, marking the 13th time UP has won since 1913.

County agent Ivan Liljegren reports fewer Pale Western Cutworms in Cheyenne County wheat fields this spring based on light trap results from summer surveys in western Nebraska. Peak moth flight occurred Sept 12 to Oct 2, with few moths found. more Western Army Cutworms are expected next spring.

Airport Grading Work Nears First Concrete At Sidney

Nebraska State Aeronautics Department representatives checked progress on the Sidney Airport runway extension project. Materials for the concrete mix arrived, with 30 railroad cars of sand loaded and 130 more awaiting arrival. First concrete laying could occur before month’s end, according to observers.

Stolen Radio Returned in Unusual Way at Sidney

A radio stolen from Western Auto in Sidney was recovered by breaking a plate glass window. Inside a brown paper sack was the radio with the note This is that stolen radio look inside. Police Chief Sol Willis suggested a father might have returned it after discovering his son’s theft.

Two New Oil Sites Listed Over County

Cheyenne County reports two new oil well locations, Gemco Oil Co. Jobe No 1 near 22-16-50 and Baumgartner Oil Co. Rangers No 2 near 19-17-51, with activity at the Fox No 1 north of Potter. Morrill, Kimball, Banner and other counties show additional discoveries, tests, and plugged wildcats across several fields including Blotgett No 1, Rodman B-3, and Stuarco tied wells.

Impressive Wheat Yields Boost Nebraska Harvest Outlook

Department of Agriculture forecasts Nebraska wheat at 76,148,000 bushels from 26.9 bu/acre, up from 62,852,000 bushels at 19 bu/acre in 1956. Panhandle counties, led by Cheyenne with 6–7 million bushels at 30 bu/acre, push the record yield amid harvest completion and ongoing sugar beet and corn prospects.

Year’s Blaze Loss Four Lives and Massive Damage

Sidney firemen answered 141 calls during the year as Fire Prevention Week closes. Four family members died in a home fire near the city, with total property damage estimated at 146690. The department reported 17 city and 20 rural damage calls, 48 city summonses, 28 outside-city summonses, and 28 silent calls.

City Ladder Truck Wrecked In Smash

The Sidney electric distribution department lost one of its three vehicles when an aerial ladder truck crashed with a 1938 car at the intersection of 18th Avenue and Elm Street at 12 04 p m. Ellsworth Ferguson 31 drove the truck and Mrs Maxine Montgomery 22 of Sidney piloted the other vehicle. The collision center occurred near the intersection as the truck rolled over damaging the ladder and exterior gear.

Final Rites Set Here Saturday For L. T. Rezanina 89

Funeral services for L. T. Rezanina 89 will be at 9 am Saturday from St Patrick s Church. Rev Albert Albel to officiate with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. Rosary at 7 pm tonight at Gehrig and Son. Survivors include four daughters two sons one sister and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Rezanina lived 70 years in Cheyenne County after moving from Austria as a child.
