An incident during the fourth district American Legion convention left a man fatally injured after being struck by a car. The official program lists registration, meetings, speeches, and a parade, with events continuing from morning through a late evening dance.
Sidney opens its arms to The American Legion and the Auxiliary for the first post war fourth district convention. About 100 delegates from the region and 50 to 60 auxiliary members will attend, with many non delegates joining for sessions and fun. The nine to midnight schedule uses the city auditorium with 2000 seats and side meetings in the basement. The new 939146 Tinois street club rooms prove popular and financed in three months. Plans tax a $40,000 legion home as a future project. The Auxiliary meets at the Methodist church today. officials hope the gathering strengthens post unity and leadership toward world peace.
Andy Christensen was reelected commander of Neely Post 22, American Legion, at the annual meeting. He will be supported by Frank Valasek as first vice commander and Hiram Vowers as second vice commander. other officers and committee chairs were named. Delegates to the fourth district convention are Charles Bohac, A. Christensen, Frank Valasck and A. Pedrett. convention set for Sidney on Tuesday Oct 9.
Mayor Walt Jones outlined postwar plans envisioning rapid population growth, irrigation well expansion, new businesses, and municipal improvements in Alliance. Army Air Field status remains under Army decision. Scottsbluff plans a new high school stadium and Lincoln grade school addition to be designed by Frederic H. Porter. The stadium would seat about 1,600, directly across from the current field.
Bridgeport resident William Henry Bateman, 67, was fatally struck by a westbound car on Highway 26 four miles north and three-quarters of a mile west of Bayard. The driver was Richard V. Copsey, 53, of Alliance. Patrol Lt. Marvin Nelson and Morrill County authorities investigated the collision as Bateman apparently crossed to obtain radiator water.
Frank L. Prohaska aged 60, brother of Mrs. J W Hurt of Sidney, was found dead Friday night beneath a tractor at the Ole Olson farm in Banner county. Sheriff J G Shaw and County Attorney W H Kirwin said the accident likely happened Wednesday afternoon while he was combining wheat when a broken hitch caused the tractor to overturn after a chain was attached to the combine. The body was discovered at 8:30 a m Saturday by Ed McGowan as he passed the Kirk community. Prohaska had left home Wednesday morning with lunch, saying he would stay with neighbors if needed. The inquiry is ongoing. continuous note.
The Sidney Business and Professional Women's Club joins the National Federation in observing National Business Women's Week from October 7 to 13. With 1750 clubs nationwide, the local group marks the eighteenth anniversary by recruiting new members and promoting the theme Jobs Enough To Go Around. Adelaide Duis Hazel Elwell Laura Rudd and Edna Scriber lead the membership drive while the club adopts Our World to Build for winter program planning.
Lodgepole is riding a winning streak in six man football after a 32-20 victory at Potter last Thursday. Coach Sommerfield's squad faced stiff competition from the Bearcats but rallied to pull ahead and secure the win in a high scoring contest.
Nebraska receives 5.5 million dollars of the 200 million allocated to rural electrification through REA loans. 27 districts in the state will get earmarked funds for new districts before year end, with potential requests for eight million more for new construction. Construction costs for REA lines have risen to about 1100 dollars per mile from 800, with other costs up about 25 percent. Meetings in Cheyenne County discussed extending roughly 568 thousand dollars in REA funds, though the overall need remains vast.
Last Friday telephone workers staged a protest affecting service here. Calls remained largely routine despite announcements of possible delays. Local workers including National Federation of Telephone Workers members said the action aimed at a War Labor Board order that would disband a Western Electric company union and require employees to join CIO or AFL.

University of Nebraska experts report lifted embargo on civilian turkey sales brings ample supply for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Turkeys are larger and higher in production by 18 to 20 percent versus 1944, with toms at 26 weeks weighing 23 to 24 pounds and hens 15 to 16 pounds, offering buyers good size choices.
Harold C. Craig received a city council approval Friday night for a special use building permit to move his home from 10th and Maple Street to the north edge of his property. He plans to extend his lot by thirty feet north to clear space for a new funeral home on the corner lot, with no timeline given for the work.
State Tax Commissioner Robert Armstrong told the State Association of Real Estate Brokers that farm real estate accounts for 72 percent of rural tax revenue while city and town real estate pays 69 percent of urban taxes. He urged uniform listing and better classification to balance the burden, noting county assessments vary from 31 to 90 percent and citing Cheyenne County where rural property yields 60 percent of tax revenue and town property 39 percent.

The city council delayed action on proposed increases in Sidney's steam rates pending a meeting between the council’s finance committee and the power board. The American Legion fourth district convention in Sidney today expects at least 300 out of town visitors plus many from Sidney Post No. 17. Department Commander A C Smith of Scottsbluff will lead Nebraska leaders at appearances on the program. Registration starts 9 a.m. at the city auditorium, with the convention called to order at 1:15 p.m. by District Commander Ole Flaten.
The American Legion took an option on property at the southwest corner of 10th avenue and Linden street to construct a new 40000.00 dollar legion home. Owned by Charles Hornaday, the site once bore the Radcliffe name and lies near Sidney's business district. Dr R E Roche, regional committee chair, said plans are to proceed when materials and labor are available. A brick structure is likely and no drawings are ready yet. The site is three blocks from downtown Sidney, deemed ideal.
Council names J. K. Mahr as city plumbing inspector after years without one. The appointment fulfills ordinances requiring a plumbing inspector’s recommendation before plumbing licenses are processed and aims to rectify the lack of an official inspector.
W B Morris 36, construction worker for Tillotson Construction Omaha, died after his car stalled on highway 30 near Sunol when struck by a vehicle driven by Howard Kerk 48 Lodgepole roads department. Morris wife and son were uninjured. Kerk blinded by Morris lights pulled to road edge and hit Morris who was changing a tire. No inquest planned. Morris died at Sidney hospital. Greyhound driver Jesse Webber witnessed the accident. Burial to Kansas City.
Dr W T Kahse who plans to leave Sidney spoke Friday night to the Rotary Club in a valedictory tone. He expressed enjoyment of Rotary affiliation during his years as a member and noted his past presidency. Chaplain Jeanette Larson led musical numbers to close the program.
A faulty motor on a refrigeration unit at The Green Lantern cafe set off a fire alarm around 2 15 a m Monday. Residents upstairs smelled smoke and found smoke in the cafe, alerting authorities. Firefighters said the motor likely stuck and could have ignited if not discovered.
