War Fund Campaign Under Way in 1945 Drive
The 1945 United War Fund campaign opened Monday night with leaders from most county precincts attending. Chairman W. P. Ackerman urged committeemen to reach or exceed last year’s quota by October 15 and to push generosity so soldiers abroad do not feel abandoned now that the war is ending. Dix Boy Hurt In Football Practice
Richard Jackson fourteen year old son of Mr and Mrs Elton Jackson of Dix is in critical condition at Kimball hospital after a rupture of an accessory spleen during a Dix school football practice. He was tackled while carrying the ball on the Dix school field and operated on. doctors report the rare injury though the spleen often ruptures in such incidents.

Police report a collision at the west edge of town Monday evening involving Louis Grage of 1332 Forrest St and Louis Korvening of 1233 10th Ave. Grage made a U turn failing to see Korvening approaching from the west. 189 Nationals Assigned Here For Farm Labor Help
Up to Wednesday noon Cheyenne county had received 189 Mexican Nationals for assignment to farms to aid potato and sugar beet harvests. An arrival of 112 men in one group caused a busy afternoon as farmers requested workers. Many came from Illinois after aiding corn harvest. Labor will ease a farm labor shortage in Lodgepole Valley and nearby areas. Some North Platte Valley high schools paused classes for relief labor, though no local plans confirmed. Potato picking delayed by weather but field work resumed amid Indian Summer. Great Western Sugar Co plans to open western Nebraska factories next week. 4 Hour Telephone Strike Scheduled
A four hour protest strike is planned today from one to five o'clock unless the War Labor Board reverses its ruling requiring Western Electric workers to disband their union and affiliate with CIO or AFL. Oshkosh Scottsbluff and Rushville will gain short-wave police stations under a new state wide network announced by State Engineer Wardner Scott. Veterans of World Wars I and II will gather in Sidney for Nebraska district four American Legion convention next Tuesday October 9.
